Sounds like maybe yoga or meditation are what you're looking for in terms of making you more aware of the world around you and slowing down. You do alot of work with controlling your breathing which helps control emotions.

Martial arts does have some great mental benefits. Since you have to control your techniques, that leads to greater emotional control. It instills discipline too and you can get through things you thought you couldn't get through (such as board breaks or long, hard testings). The endurance I learned from martial arts helped me through a rough time in my life that I thought would devastate me.

It all depends on the type of school you go to. Some are very laizze-faire and others are very traditional. Most are somewhere in between. You have to check around to find the school and style that suits you. You should be allowed to observe one class and/or take a free class before signing up. A good instructor/master should be able to talk to you and recommend what school and/or style would suit you even if his is not what you're looking for.

I practice Hapkido and I think one of the mental benefits is the sheer number of techniques we need to memorize and be able to retrieve at a moment's notice!

good day i imagine people do not comprehend martial arts because of what they see on television and in magazines. there is not any longer some thing better effective than the old television set to warp youthful minds. maximum martial artists get into martial arts typically because of the crap they watched as a newborn. Its no longer till you've been practise for fairly many years that you extremely initiate to comprehend what its all about. the ultimate aspect that could want to ensue might want to be to split the humanities. Martial activities for bbj, boxing, judo and so on. Martial arts for karate, iaido, jutjutsu, akido, kung fu and so on. scuffling with is an exceedingly small piece of the puzzle! It takes intelligence to be able to workout consultation some thing else. people in this international elect a short restoration. Martial Arts are lengthy time period and by no skill the gymnasium! regards idai

There are many options.
Traditional martial arts (with emphasis on resprct, self control, forms etc), yoga, transcendental meditation, or any kind of meditation can help this. If there is a meditative tradition in your faith, you might want to check that out.
I like traditional martial arts (Tae Kwon Do to be specific) because you train both your body & your spirit.

Any martial art can teach self discipline that would enable you to control yourself. If you're really having problems concentrating on anything you should talk to a doctor about adult ADHD or depression, as they can both cause a lack of mental focus.
