I've never had it, but what is the difference between it and 'fine' wine?

And can it be drunk as is or is it better mixed with other spirits or carbonated water?

Table wine really means a natural, still, non-fortified wine -- in other words the sort of wine you would accompany dinner with. If you've drunk a glass of wine, then you have had a table wine.

It has come to mean an ordinary wine.

But there are a number of legal definitions. In Germany a Tafelwein is the lowest level in their wine law quality classification.

In the USA wineries can put Table Wine in the label instead of putting the alcohol level when the level is between 7% and 14% abv. Since US wineries must get label approval in advance every time anything on the label changes this enables them to print a large amount of labels instead of new ones every year and getting approval.

Can you mix it? Sure!

Mix a white wine with carbonated water and you get a 'sprittzer' -- refreshing long drink on a hot day.

Mixing with spirits is done to make a Sangria.

You'd only do this with a basic wine. If you'd paid $100 for a wine then you would want to enjoy its flavors, not mix it with something else. But a $10 wine? Sure, go ahead.

Its only a drink.

Table wine usually refers to a wine that is good for everyday meals and is usually on the cheap side. Because it is cheap doesn't mean that its bad, my favorite is Livingston Cellars Red Rose. Its about $6 for a gallon and goes with almost any food.
Mixing it would be up to you, with wine it is really open to a persons individual tastes.

Table wine is just a term for an inexpensive wine. I believe it originated from Italian families that served it at every dinner and was usually home made.
