I have used pound cake. It worked very nicely. Because of the Constancy of the cake it didn't break apart like regular cake would

For a good chocolate fondue you can use either angel food cake or pound cake. Cut into large cubes, both are firm enough to dip without crumbling. You can also try large macaroons, the soft kind, cut into quarters.
Here's an idea: bake or buy a tube-pan angel food cake. Fill the hole in the middle with fresh strawberries, blackberries, or a mix of the two. Stick candles in the cake and sing happy birthday. Then, cube the cake and give everyone a few berries, and use both cake and berries for yummy chocolate fondue dippers.

Nope, never have!
I think a Birthday cake would be too crumbly though, you may need to have firmer dippers suce as vegetables or day old bread.
