With watermelons you turn them over and look at the yellow spot on the bottom. The darker the yellow spot the riper the melon. The others you need to smell them and if they smell like melons they are ripe. The knocking is done by people who live in the north and know nothing of growing food or buying it.If you see someone in the south doing this they are a transplant.

Cantalope and Honeydew are ripe when you can smell them at their stem end and they smell like the fruit inside. I don't know about watermelon but on the other two knocking does nothing...except bruise the fruit.

Who knows..........I look for bee stings, so the fruit must be sweet and ripe.
