I listen to contempoary Christian music because that is what I feel like listening to.
It is a fact of life that whatever a person allows to occupy his mind will sooner or later determine his speech and his action. This is the premise behind Philippians 4:8 and Colossians 3:2,5: establishing wholesome thought patterns. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says we "take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ." This is how we allow Jesus to be "the Lord of our lives". That gives us a pretty clear picture of the kind of music we SHOULDN'T listen to.
Obviously, the best kind of music we can listen to is that which praises and glorifies God. There are a lot of Christian musicians and singers out there, spanning nearly every genre available to the secular market. From there, it is a matter of taste. There is nothing inherently wrong any particular style of music. But if secular music leads you to think about, or get involved in something that does not glorify God – then you should avoid it.

Music. well. Lew me tell you that music was one of my biggest struggles.
I was saved two years ago at the age of 16, and when that happend music was one of the largest parts of my life.
It wasnt until I heard a sermon preached by my pastor as of now, that I came to realise just how powerful music is.
I will do my best to try and explain this. . .
Satans job before was to bring the praise and worship from earth to God.
The bible says that he had instraments that we cant even imagine coming out from his sides.
Satan cannot come up with his own ideas he can only pervert what God has already created.
So, wouldnt it make sense that the main thing that satan was in charge of, the one thing he knew most about was one of his biggest tools?
I beleive that is why many beleivers have such a hard time with it.
Now that we got that out of the way,
I dont listen to any music that if heard my an unbeleiver could be mistaken for "worldly" music.
If we are supposed to be set apart, concecrated, not conformed
to this world. doesnt that include sounding like them too?
People use the excuse all the time, "I dont listen to the music I listen to the words"
But when it comes to worldly music they say, "I dont listen to the words I listen to the music."
Have you ever experienced listening to some type of music and you immediatly take on the mood it portrays?
e.g. If i listened to some depressing music, I would begin to feel depressed.
We are supposed to meditate continually on him and I beleive that applies to music as well.
Music is tied to your memory.
If I hear a certain song I can almost immediatly remember where I was and who I was with,
wouldnt it be great to remember an encounter with God?

I don't think it's right to say there is any music we CAN'T listen to, but I think that we should be aware of what we listen to and why. I personally don't want anything to do with artists who use lyrics that are degrading or insulting. As you can see, it's more about the lyrics than the music itself. But then there is also the context - I wouldn't snub listening to music from "Sweeny Todd," for example, because even if it has to do with murder or whatever, it is part of a musical show and has an artistic value.

I think music is great, but should not over power a service. Music should set the mood for worship, not music is what you worship. I personally love Southern Gospel. I think if one listens to rock and roll well that only promotes sex, drugs and anything ungodly. The bible says abstian from all apearances of evil. The bible also says also come out from among them and be ye seperate saith the Lord. We should be different from the world. Not sure if I answered what you asked or not.

For obvious reason, you are not talking about the lyrics but about the accompaniment. (It is assumed that the lyrics will be uplifting)
You also need to differentiate between music for entertainment (in your home, car, etc) and church services. But remember that you are a Christian ALL THE TIME.
I try to follow the guidelines below, (but fellow musicians in my church have different ideas):
1. Biblically, percussion was not used in religious services as accompaniment . It was allowed to some extent in social entertainment (Mariam and the tambourine).
2. The volume of the accompaniment should be background to the vocals.
3. Music in the church should be uplifting, and directed outward toward God (as opposed to degrading, entertaining, and self-centered).
Therefore, about 95 % of what is generally called religious, gospel, contemporary christian, christian rock, etc, are TOTALLY UNFIT FOR CHURCH, and to a great extent, for even one's personal entertainment outside of church.

ok this is how i feel about it.
if the music magnifies God then there's definitly nothing wrong with it. ppl try to say only gospel, but any kind of christian music is ok obviously.
i don't see anything wrong with listening with other genres of music if it's not degrading to God.
the music you listen to reflects who you are. look at it this way, if you wouldn't play it around Jesus you probably shouldn't listen to it

I switched to christian music along time ago. the reason is because the messages in the music is 100% christian & u can find it in the bible. & most christian artists take their songs right out of the bible itself!!!!!
