I would suggest you start with something general.
"When Mommy's and daddy's get married and love each other very much, God blesses them with a baby...
If that's not enough information for them, then you will have to step it up a bit.
Mommy and Daddy love each other very much and when we kiss and lay very close together it makes a baby.
And if they want more you will have to explain,
Daddy has a penis and mommy has a vagina. Daddy's penis fits in Mommy's vagina and that is how babies are made.
I can remember my 4 and 6 year old daughters wanting full details when I was pregnant with my 3rd daughter.
My husband and I told them what we thought was appropriate for their age, but every few weeks they would up the question.
When we finally gave them the details they both said Eeeww!
They asked again several times over the years.
They are now 24, 28 and 30. I'm sure they are well informed by now!
If you can explain this to them as a natural and beautiful way God gave husbands and wives to love each other it will open the door so they always feel they can come to you.
They are going to get the information they want anyway so it might as well come from you. Try not to put these questions off too long as they will sense that these are things that are embarrassing or shameful.
This is the easy stuff wait until they're 13 and 15.....

I worked with a 4 and 6 year old when I was pregnant. They asked me where my baby came from, and I asked them what they thought the answer was (they also have a baby sister). The older boy said "From God." And I said, "That's right" and they were fine with that.
Then they asked how the baby would get out. Since they didn't seem to want too much detail on the prior question, I just said "I'll go to the hospital, and the doctor will help get the baby out." They seemed ok with that, as well.
No lies, nothing to overwhelm them, and if they wanted to know more, I'd give them bit by bit until they were satisfied. Sometimes kids just want a simple answer.
If a kid wants more detail, they'll let you know by asking the every-present "Why" and "How", in which case, you can give them more specifics.

When my daughter was 6, after I became pregnant with my 2nd daughter, I told her God put her there. We wanted a baby so God gave us one. Now she is 9 and we have had another daughter. I told her that when a mommy and daddy love each other so much that love makes a baby, with God's help. That worked until she caught me and my husband. Now she knows exactly how it gets there! I think the truth is always good, even if they are young. I would not tell my 3 year old that mommy and daddy have sex and that is how babies are made. She has never asked me. She thinks they get in thru the belly button. Words from my sister and mother. Start small and in words they can understand. Trust me, they will share info on this subject.

I have to agree with everyone that is saying to tell them the truth. The fact of the matter is your 8 year old has probably heard some version of how people have sex by her classmates or older kids on the play ground.
I told my children the truth but I also told them that babies do not love thier moms and dads when they are born they are always crying and wanting to eat and super fussy. Alot of girls think that if they have a baby it will love them.
I also told them that after they have a baby any dream they ever had about travling or anything else is gone.
I wanted to make them think that having a baby is not the greatest thing in the world for they will be careful later on in life.
Plus I let them watch the TLC show and how the women screamed and were sick while having that baby. Maybe I messed them up but I do not want them to be moms at the age of 15.

It depends on wher you live.If you live in USA or Europe where children are facing the reality of sex in TV or at school ,there 's no need to hide .Tell the truth in words that they understand.Use very formal expressions and do not go to details.
I live in a country that children will understand it when they are teenagers so I will not tell the truth to my little 8 years old daughter.I told her that I asked God to give me a daughter and I was given but she knows that she was born by Csection and know the place of surgeryon my body.
I can't tell her that doctors have a key to open the door of my womb!!!!

Always, always, always tell the truth! Give them as much information as they request, and don't do it in an embarrassed way, or they might not come back to you for more information. They'll learn the wrong stuff from someone else. Don't wait until your kids are teenagers! Kids are having unprotected sex (because no one ever taught them anything) at twelve and thirteen. Your kids will always know more than you think they know, and a large portion of what they "know" will be wrong in ways that will shock you!

Well, I don't think they need a biology lesson yet UNLESS they are already getting misinformation somewhere else. My girls are about 5 and 7 and they just think babies are a gift from God to married couples, and they just "appear" in the mommy's tummy when a couple is so blessed by the Lord.

There are alot of books out there so that parents don't feel so lost while answering the question in a basic & simple way for kids to understand. I would search Barnes & Noble or Amazon. Remember that simple & straight forward is the way to go-they really don't need a bunch of details that that age.

Just tell them that when a women and a man get married, they want to have kids. Or you can say that when a couple gets married, God grants them a child. You know, keep it light, don't ever add anything about sex or else they will start talking about it out loud in school without realizing how embarrasing it sounds. Then once their teens, you can tell the real truth.

Tell the truth. A boy sticks his penis in a girl's vagina. That gets her pregnant. 9 months later the baby comes out of her vagina. If you don't want to get pregnant then use a condom.
