I think only if a known felon or in a case if their is a victim in the car. Here in New Jersey maybe 5 years ago a guy I knew slightly along with his wife and child were killed by a police pursuit. This particular case I think was a teen running because of running a red light. Who knows he might have been running from a bank robbery, but he wasn't. Police should use judgment in these cases. Also, alot of cops get hurt in silly chases.

Most jurisdictions are banning high speed pursuits unless the person being pursued is suspected of committing a serious felony, however there are still to many where the police have the tag number, therefore the name and address and you are right sometimes innocent people are maimed or killed needlessly. Not all high speed chases should be banned but those for minor infractions and where the police officer knows the name and address of the person running should be.

Bound's hubby here:
I can see the need for the high speed chase. I think departmental guidelines and officer judgement should prevail ... it is always easy to "Monday morning quarterback" the cop, be it in an officer involved shooting or a high speed chase.
While you cannot outrun a radio, it is true that there are times and situations that may necessitate a high speed chase. I think it is irresponsible to take away options that may be instrumental under certain conditions.

Not just innocent people get killed, cops get killed everyday because some crazed killer is on the loose. If he doesn't stop someone who's to say an innocent bystander doesn't get shot. It should be left up to the officers discretion. Normally though, if you're innocent, you're not going to put people in danger because you ran a red light. Your common good citizen will stop. People need to stop blaming the police and put the blame on the criminals.

Many police deparment have already taken steps to curtail high speed chases, and they have ordered their officers to stop the chase when it poses a great danger of innocent people getting hurt, or killed.

sometimes if a person is swerving and running people over left and right, then it is somewhat important for the safety of the citizens

We can but imagine how giddy and happy criminals would be should they be able to always evade law enforcement simply by floor-boarding the accelerator.
