my 11 week puppy died last night in his sleep. we just got him three weeks ago, he was up to date on his shots and was supposed to get his final set tomorrow at 3. He didnt throw up or have diarreha, but the vet thinks it was parvo because it is going around. He slept a lot, and kept to himself rather than play with the other dogs, but I never saw any signs of sickness, he ate and drank but was a little letarghic (i know i spelled that wrong, i dont care) anyone have any idea what it could from? I have two other dogs, we are getting them checked out for parvo tomorrow morning, and are on alert tonight, they seem okay though. Im so angry and confused, any ideas would be appreciated!

he already had two sets of parvo shots, and was scheduled for his third tomorrow, exactly the date in which was 3 weeks from his 2nd set of shots. Any ideas other than parvo? He really didnt have any of the symptoms. He was a German Shepard Mix.

I didn't even read any of the other answers, but there are many things that can cause the symptoms you described. First, parvovirus is usually deadly only when it begins showing the gastrointestional effects which include diarrhea and vomiting as well as loss of appetite. What you have described sounds more like Canine Distemper. This virus can effect both the gastrointestional system as well as the neurological system. It can effect both, or can individually strike. The nerological form, also known as NeuroDistemper, is the most fatal, because it has such a sudden onset. The dog will seem to be a little lethargic, and will sleep a lot, however the seizures will hit very fast. Mostly, they are grand-maul seizures that kill the dog. Most dogs, especially puppies, cannot survive Neuro Distemper because the seizures cannot be controlled/stopped by normals drugs.
Distemper can be contracted and held for up to 10 days before it presents the signs, however distemper symptoms can occur in dogs after their booster shots. These symptoms can kill the dog, because the shot is a live distemper virus in a small dose to build immunity.
I am very sorry you have had to go through this, but know that if your other dogs have had even just ONE distemper shot, they aren't in any danger.

It could have been parvo. Parvo shots are not a guarantee of immunity from all strains of parvo but they do offer some protection. It could also be a heart or lung problem like someone else said. That would not necessarily been obvious if the pup never played much. He could also have suffered an injury at some point in his young life that caused him to not want to run and play with other dogs that may have gotten worse.

We had our 9 week old BichonPoo 2 weeks when he became ill..vet thought it was the parvo virus as well and we spent a sleepless night watching him..it turned out he had some other virus..anti biotics worked great..I understand your anger and confusion..and your grief..your puppy could have been exposed to a virus from dog trails..parks..or from an older dog who can carry a virus and not be sick..limited socializing is best for a puppy..sorry for your loss..

Let me say that I am sorry for your loss, losing a pet is never easy. I wish I could say I had an answer to your question, but, I don't. I think it is very wise to have your other dogs checked by your vet. And I would also call the person that you got your puppy from, especially if it was a breeder and let them know what happened as well. Good Luck to you and your other doggies.

Parvo Virus can be spread very easily. He may have gotten shots at whatever he was but they always need it a second time at 12 weeks. I cant remember why though. They dont always have to show signs. For more info: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/canine_parvovirus.html

I have no idea what it can be. I havent study enough of animal health yet, but ask teh vet to do blood tests on them.

i dont know but if you feel bad just read this hopefully itll make you feel better!

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am so sorry for the loss of your darling puppy. It does sound like parvo. I'm glad to hear that you are having your other dogs checked out. Please find comfort in knowing that he had a wonderful life with you, even though your time together was brief. Take care of yourself.

I am so sorry you lost your puppy. I know how it feels. I had Murphy my cocker spaniel from the time she was 8 weeks old until she was 4 years old. I loved her so much, but she started having seizures that could not be controlled, and so i loved her enough to not let her suffer. We never know why things happen, but i feel in my heart that when we have a pet we have a small piece of heaven so to speak because of their unconditional love for us. No matter what we do they'll always love us.
