That is hard to answer. It depends on the user and what they use the phone for, some are better than others for texting, some have better camera features. There's so much out there, but the big names are almost a sure bet: Nokia, Samsung, etc. You need to figure out what your main use of the phone will be and ask your local network which phone they recommend.

Nokia. if i had all the money in the world, the first thing i would buy, is NOT going to be a ferrari, but one of each nokia, starting with 5110.
Motorola used to be good, but the latest, startig with the V3, U6 and so on, are horrible. But they do look trendy.
Bottom line, you want an ugly but reliable - Nokia
you want a cool pimp-ish tech tool, that answers phone calls on its own, freezes and restarts all by itself - Motorola

Well I can tell you that I've had nothing but trouble from my Sprint LG phone. I'm on my third phone because it keeps going out. I know that's not what you asked but just thought you might like to know.
