I don't think theists understand that atheism is a completely non-confrontational point of view. We don't want to convert anyone, we don't want to change anyone's minds, we just want to be left alone with our beliefs.
Too many religious people are taught that they need to convert the heathens (i.e.: the athiests or those in the "wrong" religion), or they simply can't understant how someone can live a good life without the imaginary restraints of a deity.
Good question, I would like to see some answers from the religious folk. Especially those that answer every "what's a good book" question with the bible. (To those individuals: did you know that there have been books published since the bible? They're available in bookstores now!)

It seems the more popular the religion, the more paranoid the people. But since I am a Theist, I'll answer. I'm not at war, physically or spiritually, with anyone. Outside of curiousity about what people think about these types of things, I really don't care what another person believes (so long as they leave me out of it). Of course, I do have my own opinions and some are, well, less than "respectable", especially when it comes to these things. I guess that 5% (You are so generous, I would have said at least 20% feel this extreme about it) feel that everyone is out to get them and their God. And since their God isn't here to stand up for himself, they must do it for him. I've never really understood this line of thinking. I wouldn't claim to follow an ALL-Powerful God and then have to stand up for him/her.

Jim:
No. Most theists believe IT IS a war...a "spiritual war" and atheists are being "used" by the devil, demons or "spirits". I would say that 95% of christians believe this...I'm not sure about muslims or other theists.
Just for fun, I'm going to ask how many believe in this "spiritual war" concept just to see how accurate my estimates are.

Atheists are viewed as a destructive enemy to the church because they are very hostile towards it. In the 90's, there was a string of church burnings in Europe perpetrated by a "Norwegian Death Metal" satanic group of wonderful humanitarians. After being interviewed they were very proud of what they did after serving a light jail sentence and looked forward to when they could do it again heiling Satan all the way. (literally!)
The peaceful egghead God-haters in America are the ones responsible for turning our public schools into atheistic training camps spreading their anti-religious rhetoric to liberals for the purpose of reinterpreting the 1st amendment. (thereby destroying it) Atheists will not be happy until the secularization of America is complete and the govt is 100% hostile towards religion. Oh do I have them pegged wrong? Read some of the hate-filled distasteful, out-of-context, braindead vomit on this lovely humanitarian site......

I love it.
The hate, satire and endless rude insults have poured like water from endless people calling themselves Atheist. Now someone steps up and decides to fight back and all of a sudden we have respect? Oh that's so funny I can't even stand it. I am not at war with Atheist. I don't even believe in Atheist. I actually love you guys. You are just silly and very inconsistent.
May GOD richly bless ya.

We understand your place (and for this reason your criticism), yet we don't accept as true with it. regrettably, the main important hurdle it isn't probably to be conquer is that jointly as we regard our ideals as basically that (and prefer political ideals, musical style or something, something it is (many times) no longer set in stone yet concern to alter), you haven't any longer have been given an analogous view of your very own ideals, yet quite regard them as some "bigger certainty" which could no longer be questioned, can't be reasoned with, can't be changed. So, the place we see something pleasing in nature, so do you, yet you chosen to treat it as data of a deity and would't be questioned on it. the place we see yet another sub-sect of Christianity, you spot satanists, and look at that we could be an analogous because we deny God. the place we see some solid, if primitive morals that are frequently nicely worth accepting and residing by, you spot God's regulations which could in basic terms be accepted in case you settle for God. the place we see a pleasing sundown, you spot something which could in basic terms be created by somebody on your earnings and for this reason that God could be in the back of it. We see the completed faith as no longer something extra effective than a house of enjoying cards, held up in basic terms by your very own faith. I for one, can nicely understand why you may not enable any questioning of that faith to pass into your head (it may nicely deliver the completed edifice crashing down), besides the indisputable fact that it continues to be immensely stressful while your (to me, fake) faith that your concept is the real and in basic terms one, leads you to criticise others totally on the muse of that faith (you haven't any longer any morals, you will hell, you paintings for the devil) or look for to impose the regulations that include your faith on others.

i am not trying to war with anyone. the atheists put us down for our beliefs, so i think its only fair to stand for what i believe. i also agree that we should not try to shove our beliefs down the atheists throats. when will both sides call a truce?
