I know it's early to think about this but I'm expecting again very close to Christmas so I'm planning ahead. We don't have alot of money but I don't want to buy them any junky dollar store kinds of toys and they have tons of toys. I do want to buy them a few things that are not too expensive, perhaps educational or that make more sense than a bunch of junky stuff or that would not just become another toy sitting in their toybox. My son is 18 months and my daughter is 3. I've got plenty of stocking stuffer ideas. It's also so much easier to buy online - any great ideas and web links?

My daughter loves the peek a boo blocks from fisher price.

Also you can go with Play doo and crayons. Fun character slippers because they'll like them and they are practical.

Also around Christmas alto of toys go buy one get one free especially with games so one can get Candy land and the other can get a memory game ( or similar)

Right now my kids are 2, 8, and 10. It is too late now but I regret not limiting them to 1 present from Santa.

They are also at the age where second hand isn't bad. You can get some nice toys at a consiegnment store. I've bought some used video games for my son before and he really didn't notice.

We recently got my 3 year old the InteracTV system and it is great. It is a tv video game but very educational, they have counting and stuff on there and my daughter has really enjoyed it. We also just got her a scooter and she has had fun with that. Books are always wonderful. Try Leap Pad too, they teach great stuff.

A good source for free things is freecycle.org Look up your area and join. Last year for Christmas we only bought my daughter one thing new, the rest came from garage sales, consignment sales and stores and stuff we got from freecycle! Try making some time to hit some garage sales before it gets too cold if you can, there are awesome deals and your kids won't care if the stuff is used because it will be new to them.

Baby Einstein and Leapfrog have nice educational toys. I would suggest buying them some books on Amazon. I highly recommend the Karen Katz flap books ("Where is baby's Mommy", "Where is Baby's Belly Button") , and the Sandra Boynton books such as "But Not The Hippopotamus" or "Hippos Go Berserk". Instilling an early love of books is one of the best things you can do for a toddler.

Books are good. This is the age when you should try to read at least one book a day with your child. It helps the two of you bond while he learns. Giving him a love for books now will encourage him to learn also.

I like to go to Ebay and find toys that are being sold in lots. Sometimes you can find lots that have toys still in their original packaging. (They're cheap and you don't have to run to every store in town looking!)

Fisher Price has a lot of nice toys on their site and you can also see which skills it helps your child to learn. that way if he is excelling in one area, you can find a toy in another area he needs to work on and go from there.

You can't go wrong with bath toys. Does your child have the Squiggle Elmo? It comes with crayons they can use on the shower wall and a stuffed Elmo that they can play with in the tub and you can throw him in the washer when he gets funky. (He has a loop so you can hang him up to dry)

My son is almost 2 and his favorite thing these days is blocks. The wooden kind, in different shapes an colors. The brand is "imaginarium", I think. They're easier for him than legos, because they don't have to fit together. They make a mess of your house, but at least they don't require batteries!
