My dear husband and my daughter were making caramel apples as I had just a surgery, they wanted to do something to make it fun and special for my recovery wishes. For them they think they did it right, I thought so too...only thing though, my dh told me the caramel got VERY THICK, and wasn't sure how to thin it just right before you dipp it...he put a little pat of the crisco sticks in..which I thought was odd. The apples tasted real good, but you could taste that buttery shortening ...I HATE the flavor of butter!!...I just wanted to see if any of you knew what it is that you do to thin the caramel right before you dipp the apples?? Thank you in advance for your inputs Best Blessings to each and everyone of you!!!!

thin it with milk (a little bit at a time as you can always add more but can't take it back as easily) just add it slowly as you are heating the caramel (preferably in a double boiler by the way) until you get the consistancy you desire

If it's hot or warm, you could try to add just a touch of heavy cream into it and incorporate it in. You'll get the more of the richness without the the taste of butter if you don't want it. Butter or fat (crisco sticks) isn't going to thin it out unless it's hot. Once the caramel cools down the fats will solidify (think of a warm stick of butter compared to one that's been in the fridge). Good luck with your caramel!

I'd make sure it was warm first, because cold caramel sauce is very thick and gooey. If it's still thick I'd add some milk.

You can add cream, milk or plain water. ONLY add alittle at a time and stir in completely till adding more or soon it will be TOO thin.

since you added the shortning and it thinned out
add some crushed nut's and some nutmeg-or-cinammon-to the mix ( next time if this happens ,warm water will delute the syrup and not change the taste !

we used to make them a lot when my kids were little. we just stuck the caramel in the microwave for a little bit. just keep an eye on it. you don't want it to burn.

Just use plain old warm water, and whisk it vigorously. Enjoy!
