French is way more useful if you're to work in diplomacy. Or international cooperation (including NGOs) as French is spoken in many African countries.

As it has been said, German is more useful in Eastern Europe though.

In the European Union German has the most native speakers. It is very much used in the fields of Science and Engineering.
French, next to English is the most learned as a foreign language in the world so you might find you can speak to someone from Russia or Italy who can speak French but not English for example.
French is widely used in Politics and Diplomacy and is after English widest of the two (German and French) on the net.

Germans however do learn English and often do themselves a disservice in getting people to learn theirs by insisting on speaking English with you when you are quite capable of speaking their language! ( I know this from experience!)
The French on the other hand away from the heavily touristic places much prefer you to make the effort to speak their language, rather than insisting on speaking English if you try to talk to them in French!

Probably not quite what you meant be fields but...

If your work takes you to eastern Europe, German will be more useful. On the other hand, in north Africa and parts of the Near East, French is far better to know.

German for the technical fields; French for romance and cooking.

So if you want skills for advancement and knowledge, German.

If you want to eat well and get laid, French.

in the US, both are pretty worthless, unless you want to be a translator or teacher.

the only situation i can imagine french being more useful is because they speak it in parts of canada. (i speak french, by the way.)

maybe in the automotive industry it might be better to know german, since some big development goes on there, i guess.

Germans are very involved in manufacturing, however, most of them start learning English in the seventh grade. Manufacturing involves engineering, tool and die, electrical engineering, and electronics. They have a lot of factories in the US and send their employees over here to work.

French is pretty much useless.
