Dear ghwatch,
It is found in 2 Timothy 6:10. It says: For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith intheir greediness, and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
2 Timothy is a book where Paul instructs Timothy on how to be a good minister for God. He encourages Timothy only four verses before that Godliness with contement is great gain.
i think the way you have quoted it may take it out of context. i definitely do agree with what the Bible.
When you look at some of the ills of society: prostitution, pornography, drugs, ... (a lot of those ills are dictated by a desire for money-- at the cost of exploiting and hurting others).
Also in some cases we see parents who become so obsessed with making money that they have neglected their children and faith. Opting to work on Sundays and Holidays instead of being there with family and growing in their faith. (Yes there are situations where families are so poor- that parents need to work that hard to survive-- i'm speaking more generally)-- that learning contentment along with Godliness (investing in God and people- ie: spending time raising strong families, etc.) is more valuable than adding a couple of extra "G(s)" into one's bank account.
Hope that helps,
Nick

yes, but don't make the mistake, as many do, of assuming that people who are rich in wordly goods and ready cash are greedy and evil. Most people with lots of money find ways to support charities and foundations and put their money to good use. remember, it's the LOVE of money the Lord condemns, not the having of it.
