maybe this accounts for his sporadic acts of nastiness like not saving jesus and creating plagues and the like? maybe like us he just gets bored?

Hi Ashley,

When the Bible says that man was made in the likeness of God, it means that we have inherrent moral qualities that reflect our creator. For example-- it doesn't have to be taught that murder and rape are wrong... Also as God is perfect- we've in us to desire perfection (if you got a 99% on a test- naturally you would want to know what you could have done to get a 100%).

Jesus' death on the cross was not an act of nastiness by God, but an act of love.

The plagues (like those described in the book of Exodus) were meant for judgment and it is right for a God who is perfectly just- to punish unrighteousness. Each of those plagues as well coincided with a false deity that the Egyptians worshipped at the time.

It is man having character traits in the likeness of God, not God having character traits like man (which is what you are suggesting when you say that God is as messed up as the rest of us). You're right on that part- that man is messed up- that's why man needs Jesus.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nick

When humans were originally created, they bore the image of God untarnished. They were not created AS God, ie, they were not identical copies, with all the power/wisdom/abilities and etc. An image of someone is just a likeness, not that person cloned.

The image of God (the part that we all still carry, btw) has become stained, twisted, and damaged by sin. To understand this, picture a freshly-made Armani Tuxedo, tailor-made. It is perfect down to the last stitch...until you put it on and go rock-climbing in it, tearing the knees and elbows on the rocks, permanently staining the cloth with mud, grass, and ground-in filth. Is it still an Armani Tuxedo? Well, yes. The damage doesn't negate the origin of the unit. However, you won't be wearing it to the Grand Ball anytime soon; you won't meet the dress code. You will have to get a new one from Armani, the manufacturer. BTW, they're incredibly expensive, and you CAN'T afford another one.

So, to help you out, your best friend sells his car and his house and buys it for you. "You're destined to go to the Grand Ball", he says. "SHE is waiting there for you...you know it's true. Don't worry about me, I can get another car and house. I'll be alright. I just want the 2 of you to be happy together."

OK , so the whole "Grand Ball" scenario is a little hokey, but...
The tux represents the image of God you wear, and messed up.
You still need a new image.
Jesus is the best friend who makes the sacrifice, to get you to the Grand Ball. Don't worry about Him, He'll be ok.
Your destiny is still waiting.

I think you misunderstand. What was meant by man being created in the image of God was that 1) We had a conscience, and 2) We had free will. I don't feel that we resemble God physically, though our souls might appear the same.

As for the rest of your comments:
The purpose of Jesus coming was to die. Period. That's why he was not saved. And the death had to be painful, and horrible.
Plagues? We bring those on ourselves.
No, God created the Earth and all creatures that inhabit the Earth because It was bored. The rest is just incidental.

I love the line out of the country song " born three months early and addicted to crack, what if jesus came back like that?"--would that not be why he said "whatsoever you have done to these the least of my brothers that you have done unto me?"--most christians just don't want to think about it because they are too self centered and judgemental--they have forgotten what compassion is--Forgive them Father, for they know exactly what they do.....who is more likely to burn in hell, being as they are PURPOSELY doing what they should know is wrong?

When God was around and made Jesus man as part of God, this was God, other men apart from Jesus, i.e. us, have to devil, satan, against us giving us temptation. That is why we are not perfect, to overcome temptation is to be truly perfect, we can't do this, but we can try.

No no no, you are trying to bring God down to our level where as tho, we are to strive to bring ourselves UP to His level. Nothing about God is messed up. Never forget ~ He tried to let us live knowing no sin at all, but as they ( Adam and Eve ) partook in what was forbidden, they now knew what sin ( and regret ) now was. Man is messed up, but that design is the prelude to learn spiritual perfection ~ thru love, peace, understanding, charity and FAITH. Undying unconditional faith.
& just for the record, He didn't "save" Jesus because that was His divine plan to save us! It had to be done, even tho we can't understand it. God bless.

No. God isn't messed up, he created us in his image, and yet gave us free will. That free will is the freedom to choose between right and wrong, to disobey him or to obey him. To accept is forgiveness and love or to find his unforgiveness and anger fall upon us.

God isn't the one who messed up, we are the ones who messed up. God Bless You.

Being made one way doesnt mean you will stay that way.
Your God gave every body the knowledge of right and wrong.
Most people just dont use it.
