Wars are never solely about one reason. They are usually a mix of power, social reasons, politics, territorial gain and perhaps but not always religious views. Myself, I never use the term religious war.. it may be a part of the whole but rarely is it the entirety. Nothing is ever as simple as it may seem.

Many power struggles between Rome (Roman Catholic Church) and heads of state have been documented throughout history. What gives you the idea that wars fought in the name of religion are devoid of these issues? There are many religions whose leadership are just as concerned with power and economic position as any of the world's politicians. We call them religious wars because of the "banners" under which they were fought. Perhaps those "ideals" were only the flimsy veil covering the real ambitions and greed of those in power.
