A.A. stands for "Associate of Arts." It is a two-year, general education degree. Usually students get an A.A. when they plan to go onto a trade school or when they will need to take a break from schooling and want to have completed a degree. B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) is the A.A. plus two years in a major (or concentrated area of study).

You can receive an A.A. at a community college. Sometimes you can also receive a certificate in things like law enforcement, nursing, early childhood development, or fire science. You cannot get a B.A. at a 2-year college. You can declare a major for the purposes of focusing in the direction of transferring to a 4-year college or university, but you do not need to declare a major to complete the courses at a community college.
