if you have pets, treat them with frontline plus, get a spray for the house that has a growth regulator in it to kill any hatching eggs,
and prevents adults from laying more eggs, then treat the yard.
If you don't do all 3 then your fighting a never ending battle.
shampooing the carpeting with a steam cleaner can help, then
vacuum everyday, place a piece of flea collar in your vacuum bag,
if you have a bagless vacuum sprinkle flea powder inside of container. this kills any fleas you may vacuum up. dispose of vacuum bags and debri from bagless vacuum promptly. good luck!

Now you've read the answers about what to put on your dog. All those things are good. Do NOT use flea shampoo or fleas collars, as they are useless, except for 1 brand called Natural Animal, which is very hard to find. (I am a groomer and I've never seen anything work this well. It dissolves the outer shells of fleas and ticks and is totally non-toxic). Also NEVER EVER dip your dog! It's toxic and extremely drying to the skin, which will make her itch so much you think she still has fleas!
Now, about the real source of the problem........
You MUST treat your house. Never mind the expensive bombs, as they are only a short term fix at best. Go to the grocery, to the aisle with the laundry products, and purchase a box or 2 of
20 Mule Team Borax. It is in a greenish box. Sprinkle it all over all your carpet. Take a stiff broom and work it down into the carpet. Walk on it for a day and then vacuum. Also sprinkle it between the cushions of the couch and chairs. If you have wood floor, sweep it into the cracks of the floors. Within 2 weeks the adult fleas will disappear and within 6 weeks all the eggs and larvae (of which there are probably thousands) will be dead.
It works by dehydrating the critters, along with any silverfish and roaches you might have (an added bonus). It is not toxic, but it will make a big dust cloud. If you don't like the do-it-yourself idea, look in the phone book and see if there's a firm called FleaBusters in your area. They do pretty much the same thing, but charge you for it. You can also check your local hardware (Ace usually carries it) for FleaStopper granules. It has a money back guarantee. It is also 100% boric acid powder, just like the 20 Mule Team Borax, but it is in granular form and doesn't make the big dust cloud. Costs about 100 times more, however. ($25 or so vs. $2.69)
Do NOT use Borateem.....it's not the same stuff

Don't get anything from the pet store, wal mart, etc. Try some advantix or frontline, those are the more waterproof brands. Advantage works just as well, they just dont advertise that it is waterproof. Wait 2 days before or after a bath to apply it. Also make sure that you have a pest control service come out to treat your house and yard. Don't wast your time buying stuff to do it yourself, it will only mask the problem temporarily. Remeber 1 flea is only 5% of the population. And not just that, many fleas could have hopped off of your pet and layed eggs in your home and yard, not to mention any larvae around. So it might be a good idea to treat your home and yard at least once if not twice. Be sure to keep your dog on flea prevention monthly to help prevent this. There is also a product your vet may have called capstar, but the thing is...it only kills the fleas that are on your dog at the time, and it usually only lasts an estimated 4 hours or so. If you have any questions about any flea preventions or what to do to take further action, see your Veterinarian, they can help you out a lot.

Oh fleas are such a pest and a pest to get off them to once they get them.
Give them a good flea bath first that will kill a bunch of the fleas right on the spot even if he dont have that many fleas.
Then put frontline on him . I know frontline isnt the cheapest thing to buy its about 45 bucks for a 3 month supply It's the only effective way to kill the fleas. I have tried the brands at Walmart, Pet stores, and flea collars , you are just throwing your money down the drain buying them products they do not work at all.

Once you put the frontline on them it will start killing the fleas within a matter of hours. I put some on my cat the other day and picked off 10 fleas within 3 hrs of putting it on her so it does work very very well.

Now, I have three cats and three dogs and it gets very very expensive for me and some people do this and some dont its a matter of choice and how your money situation is.

Once you get the fleas off your dog, you need to bomb your house with a flea killer and then vaccum . Make sure youclean your vaccum cleaner out and take it right out the trash they can live in your cleaner if they are still alive. For the months of Dec- April sometimes May I do not use frontline on them. I have never had a flea problem in the winter months because it gets so cold here in the winter and then in the spring I start it back up again .

I have checked on that site 800pet meds and to be honest Im not saving that much more from the vet.

You want to make sure you get this done very quickly. Most dogs have a allergic reaction to fleas and then they will lose their hair from digging and biting all the time been there with my dogs because I didnt have the money for frontline at the time. Also, if you dont get it taken care of then you will be dealing with tapeworms and then you have to get pills from the vet to kill the worms off. It's a vicious cycle if its not taken care off.

Good Luck

Forget the chemicals, like bombing your house. For goodness sake, it is a poison that like, is unsafe for any living being including you and your dog.

I only use flea products like Frontline, and only when they get a flea. The frontline will kill the fleas on your dog and in your home. This product does not expire, so you can keep it around forever. It too is a poison though, so follow instructions carefully. Don' t use dog products on cats. It can kill them.
Vacuum everyday if you can. Throw the bag away if your vacuum has one. Forget the flea collar in the bag trick. Turned out to be not such a good idea later on. I have forgotten why and where I read this.
The Frontline should really take care of this. If your pets are getting re infested, spread some lime (garden supply store) on your property. Not toxic and fleas hate it. When I had a problem I used it every Spring and Fall. I don't have a problem with them anymore.

Good Luck

Frontline is the best product because it KILLS FLEAS, KILLS FLEA EGGS AND KILLS TICKS. Advantage doesn not kill the eggs or ticks. Just think about this for a minute why buy something that will kill the adult fleas but not keep the eggs from hatching...ewww! Plus frontline is waterproof. As long as you wait 48 to 72 hours after a bath before you apply it. Another product worth considering if you have a heavily infested animal is Capstar, it is a small pill that you can give cats or dogs and it will kill all the fleas on the for 24 hours straight. You can use this in conjuction with fronltine.

A bad yr. for all insects, fleas included. On you pets have to get the frontline from the vet and use. Plus, I even had to use flea powder and bathe the dogs. Bombed the house 2 times. Put down powder to keep them from reproducing in my carpet and wash rugs, bedding and everything. I had them in the yard. Had to spray with bottle on end of hose. Then vacuum often and throw away the bag as soon as you are done. sprayed the yard again, I made my own spray with octagon soap and mouthwash, I read about that one. So, I guess you have to use it all this year. I had ants too. Found that spraying my kitchen counters and such with vinegar to clean got them under control. Took a while but, i eat and make food so I had to be careful. Depends on where the fleas are what you will have to do. good luck!

If you mean on the dog get something good, like K-9 advantix if for your house get all the pets out, including fish if you any and bomb the house with defoggers. That will stop your problem. go to 1800PetMeds.com and you can usually find better prices there than at a Veterinarian office. They have other products too like Frontline, but I get K-9 Advantix because has other ingredients to kill other little critters on your dog. I have 2 dogs that live in the house, and they are big dogs, and I never a a flew problem.
If it is a cat they have similar products for it, but don't let the cat go out. By the way If it a dog, don't forget that if you live in a warm climate your dog can get bitten by a mosquito and get heart worms, you can get him Interceptor for that , the only thing is for this you need a prescription. You can cal them at 1-800-petmeds. They are very good in answering any questions you have. If you have a pet you need to take care of it, because some deceases they get can affect mostly children.
So follow my advise if you so desire. You seem to care about your pet so please follow through with my advise, believe I might have 2 or 3 flees which is normal but never been infested with them. Good luck my friend.

Frontline plus...it kills the fleas within 24 hours...and last up to 1 month...but if he/she is really badly infested you can apply it every 3 weeks or so until the fleas are gone...They also have flea dips, but can be hazardous to cats and dogs...NEVER use Hartz flea products or any products from online. They can cause serious health issues, especially cats.

okay for your yard; sevens dust spray that connects to your hose takes 10 min. for your carpet sevins dust powder, just sprinkle it on okay for your pet, for your dog sevins dust powder, lightly dust on dog, after a nice cozy bath with original dawn and some conditioner. done all at once or in one day will rid you of fleas w/ in a day or two. also kills other bugs like ticks, beetles, june bugs, and carpet bugs the hose sprayer is like $22 but will last for a long time, be sure to spray 3 ft. in any direction including up from where you want it to be effective. i use this every other year. the bag of powder is pretty cheap compared to the spray. used it on my carpet and german shepard, 5 chihuahuas, and a rott. if all else fails w/ the carpet, which it wont, use salt sprinkle it all over the floor.DO NOT VACUUM!!!! you will hatch any eggs in the carpet!!! vaccum once the fleas are gone.
