To teach us...
The Law(s) (Mosaic, Levitical) are in the Bible to prove to us that we sin against God and we need a savior.
The bottom line is this:
Human beings cannot follow the Law completely, 100% of the time. We do sin, and therefore need a Savior.
The good news (Gospel) is that God has made away for our sins to be paid for, forgiven, and repented of. Through Jesus Christ, we have Salvation made available to us.

Torah, (the Law), isn't for salvation; the 613 mitzvots are a guide of how people should live. So, why follow the instructions of the Law? To be better-living people.
However, none can live good enough to "earn" salvation.
That is the purpose of Torah (the Law) ... to be a schoolmaster, bringing us to Christ. Torah, the Law, is to show us the need for salvation, the need for a Saviour, Jesus Christ, Who bore our sins in His Body on the tree/cross ...

from my limited understanding...
the law was put down so people will be aware that they have sinned, are sinning & will continue to sin (whether to the same extent, to a higher or to a lesser degree & frequency)
and now that people have become aware of that, they have no excuse to being ignorant of the fact that they cannot save themselves, for however noble a life you seem to live, however righteous an image you want to project, there will always be that law that you have broken & continue to break, that is why when jesus asked the people who wanted to stone a woman caught in sin, for who ever have no sin, cast the first stone.
so when man comes to realize that no matter how hard they try to become righteous, they cannot even come close to the criteria God (the Creator) have set up, & that is by God's laws...for whoever is guilty of the smallest infraction of the law is also as much guilty as the one who have broken the gravest of laws...
so why follow the instructions of the law?
because, after you have realized this concept of the need to be saved, & then you give all of yourself, all of your past, all of your sins, all of your broken dreams to God in exchange for his amazing grace (mercy, hope, peace, love & forgiveness)
then you can start anew & try to live for God by obeying God's laws not because of fear, not because your good works will lead you to heaven, not because it is forced on you but rather because God has first loved you & you have finally realize that, then you love Him back in return (by trying to follow the law).

The laws of the Bible are for our protection. Think of it this way: a good mother would instruct her child not to play in the street, touch a hot stove, do drugs, etcetera..why? because she wants to keep her child from harming himself because she loves him/her. The same goes with God. He gaves us His laws out of His love for us. If He didn't love us He wouldn't care if we got hurt or not. You are correct - the laws won't save us it is our faith and God's unfailing grace that does. Ephesians 2:8&9 says "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast."

GOD put Reaping and Sowing Laws (invisible Spiritual Laws) on the Earth befor HE put Mankind on it.
If you don't know how to keep from Breaking them, you could get Cursed alot.
The 10 Commandments shows you how not to get Cursed.

They are for salvation but not for justification. We establish the law because it is right, it is best, and because we love the lawgiver. Who would think stealing, murder, cheating is better anyway?

The other laws are to help us avoid other problems that are possibly not 'obvious' to us at the moment.

If you find someone who actually follows them, put them on display at the circus. The person is rare indeed.
