According to many Christians I've spoken to, it's the place where all the cool people go after they die. You know, people like Einstein, Edison, Carl Sagan, John Lennon, and Douglas Adams to name but a few. Only unthinking "Sheep for Jesus" are permitted into heaven. I think if such places actually existed, I'd opt for hell over heaven; it sounds like a great place full of great people. Heaven sounds like the place of torture!

The Bible's hell is in deed a resting place. If it weren't, why would Job want to go there to escape the torments he was going through? Ecclesiastes 9:5 tell us that "the LIVING are conscious that they will die; but the dead are conscious of NOTHING.

Jesus did not say hell is a place of torment. The word in question in Mark 947 is "Gehenna", which has been mistranslated as "hell" in some Bibles. That is where the confusion lies. The Greek word word for hell--"Hades"--does not appear in that verse.

And besides, Jesus was using symbolisms here. For example, have you heard of an immortal worm (or maggot)? I haven't. And do you know of any place on earth where a fire is still burning after thousands of years? No. Jesus was giving an illustration to picture destruction or death for the wicked-- a death from which there is no resurrection.

Actually Hel is a resting place, in the Norse religion. Hel was the name of the Goddess of Death, and Her realm is named for Her. It's a place of rest for the dead who do not die in battle and thus are not qualified to go to Valhalla. There is a small section of it called Nastrond that is dedicated to punishing murderers and oath-breakers and other nasties, but overall it's just a peaceful place of rest. When the Christians wanted to convert Scandinavia, they took the name and applied it to their place of punishment in an attempt to make the old pagan religion look bad.

Course I realize the original asker of this question will disregard this fact, I'm mainly putting it up for the benefit of other people who look at this question so they'll know that the answer is yes, at least according to the Norse: Hel is a resting place. So Marilyn Manson wasn't entirely wrong.

Jesus did not say that hell is a place of torment

There is no such place as a fiery hell.
A loving God wouldn't invent such a place (1 JOHN 4:8)
The word is often mistranslated & means the common grave of mankind

I did NOT read your details to your question cause its some bible verses which I don't care to read. However Hell is only a resting place for those who believe in hell. I do NOT believe in heaven nor hell so my answer would be no it is not.

Definition: The word “hell” is found in many Bible translations. In the same verses other translations read “the grave,” “the world of the dead,” and so forth. Other Bibles simply transliterate the original-language words that are sometimes rendered “hell”; that is, they express them with the letters of our alphabet but leave the words untranslated. What are those words? The Hebrew she’ohl' and its Greek equivalent hai'des, which refer, not to an individual burial place, but to the common grave of dead mankind; also the Greek ge'en·na, which is used as a symbol of eternal destruction. However, both in Christendom and in many non-Christian religions it is taught that hell is a place inhabited by demons and where the wicked, after death, are punished (and some believe that this is with torment).
Does the Bible indicate whether the dead experience pain?

Eccl. 9:5, 10: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all .
Does the Bible indicate that the soul survives the death of the body?

Ezek. 18:4: “The soul* that is sinning—it itself will die.”

What sort of people go to the Bible hell?

Does the Bible say that the wicked go to hell?

Ps. 9:17, KJ: “The wicked shall be turned into hell,* and all the nations that forget God.” (*“Hell,” 9:18 in Dy; “death,” TEV; “the place of death,” Kx; “Sheol,” AS, RS, NE, JB, NW.)
Does the Bible also say that upright people go to hell?

Job 14:13, Dy: “[Job prayed:] Who will grant me this, that thou mayst protect me in hell,* and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a time when thou wilt remember me?” (God himself said that Job was “a man blameless and upright, fearing God and turning aside from bad.”—Job 1:8.) (*“The grave,” KJ; “the world of the dead,” TEV; “Sheol,” AS, RS, NE, JB, NW.)

Acts 2:25-27, KJ: “David speaketh concerning him [Jesus Christ], . . . Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell,* neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.” (The fact that God did not “leave” Jesus in hell implies that Jesus was in hell, or Hades, at least for a time, does it not?)
Does anyone ever get out of the Bible hell?

Rev. 20:13, 14, KJ: “The sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell* delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.” (So the dead will be delivered from hell. Notice also that hell is not the same as the lake of fire but will be cast into the lake of fire.)

Is eternal torment of the wicked compatible with God’s personality? What would you think of a parent who held his child’s hand over a fire to punish the child for wrongdoing? “God is love.” (1 John 4:8) Would he do what no right-minded human parent would do? Certainly not! Simply put, the word Hell is translated from the Hebrew word Sheol, which means the grave, where everyone goes when they die.

No hell! Just punishments or Reward after death

If you wrong someone in this life that person will have judgement on you after death. If you refuse to pay than your family will suffer = some Asian religion

Hell is each and every time or position after we do not journey and settle for the love of God, each and every time we separate ourselves from the very floor of our being, each and every time we leave unopened the present of grace which contains us in various varieties. Peace to you.

to burn forever and ever isn't possible
when we die we are not physical any more ... we hold no physical elements if you do believe that we are spirit
therefore we do not posses the essential elements to burn anyway
it is a metaphor
