Im a 92A. Not my first choice MOS but I was 17 when i signed the contract so parents were invloved in my decision. Im 19 now and I dont want to be a 92A all my Army career. been thinking about switching it to an Infantry MOS, then going to airborne followed by ranger school How come I see so many prior infantry soldiers in a whole new MOS like cook, or finance?

It'll depend on how over/under strength your MOS is. If it's understrength, your odds are almost nil of being allowed to "reclass" If/when you do, you'll have to be sure of choosing an MOS that has airborne units. You'll not have to choose infantry specifically to qualify, but one in "comat arms". To be considered for Ranger School. or Ranger indoctrination (pre-ranger) you'll of course have to be a qualified paratrooper. If your MOS is understrength, and you're not able to reclass, you may have to wait out your current enlistment, then either get an honorable discharge, or stick to retraining as a condition of re-enlisting.
Either way ya go DO NOT DO NOT accept statements that you can go back in under your current mos and then retrain. It's a sucker tactic the recruiter will use to try and fill his quota. My recruiter almost nabbed me this way. Had it not been for a prior service soldier in the car down to MEPS I'd have fallen for it. He pulled me aside when my recruiter claimed I could only join into certain fields for 'x' explanation. He told me what was going on, and I refused to sign untill he got me combat arms. (in my case combat engineers) A slot "magically" appeared the very next day.

I was in signals, and during my AIT we had a handful of E5/E6s that reclassified out of infantry, cavalry scouts and armor to study my MOS, 29Y/31S.

We (dumbasses) would make fun off them behind their backs, but the fun did not last long. These ex-combat arms NCOs where highly motivated to nail that course.

Why?

Because they were all combat veterans, and they where done with people shooting at them.

You won't be able to switch out MOS unless your billet is declared overstaffed or it is time to reenlist.

Because nobody wants to train in the rain, or dig foxholes, think about being in basic training 4 years
