first of all, tericka is an idiot b/c clearly this is posted in the new york category, not san francisco.
second, chinatown is one of the coolest places to walk around. There are lots of street merchants trying to sell you stuff, but don't buy anything you can't assure the quality of on the spot. for example, don't buy watches, because you can't really see the durabilty and they will most likely break within a week or two. now that's not to say that every one of them is trying to rip you off, but be carful
the best thing about chinatown is the food, and that includes small fresh food markets as well as reastaurants. for the most part, the markets are trustworthy, but don't eat in a restaurant if it looks to run down or shady, and certainly if no one's in there. My suggestion though is to go and buy fresh products at the market and make a meal of your own (unless you only have a hotel room)
and the most important thing is to enjoy, no matter what happens, just make the best of it and HAVE FUN

Year ago everyone went there but now there are many good restuarents in every neighborhood. It's mostly restaurents, afew stores, and on Canal Street a big supermaket will all Chinese food and things. It now spread East and Norht and is a place where asians from alll ofver the City come to shop. Its worth going to as you can also see whats left of Little Italy, the Brooklyn Bridge, World Trade Center, Wall Street, etc., on a short walk

In the one in San Francisco, you can get those beautiful Satin Dresses for super cheap. But if that's too fancy for you, then get a satin embroidered halter top for like $10. And they have candy stores, and chinese dim sum resturants. And the fortune cookie factory! But personally, I love the Chinese dollar stores. Everything in them is sooo cheap! And they carry a lot of the same things the tourist shops have but for $1.

Really cool fake brand purses. I got 2 "pradas" and a "louis vuitton" each for $40. And they look EXACTLY the same. And they're good quality.
