My Jack Russell does exactly the same thing - I read somewhere that some Jack Russells suffer with Arthritus when they're older, so I assumed it was the start of that.

It sounds like a luxating patella. Where the knee cap does not stay on the ridge and usually falls inward ond off the bone. This causes the dog to skip. This is and should be surgically corrected to help prevent the development of arthritis. Good Luck

The answer could be dew claws !! I had same prob, although
my dog did not seem in pain.... Xrays the lot.. (a lotta money )
I had my dog clipped out, (usually did it myself but arthritis
took over) and the young Lady clipping asked me if my
dog ever 'skipped' answer, in my case dew claws and
over long claws !! problem solved, but would suggest
you get professional to do claws.. good luck

If it's his back leg, then he could have what is called a luxating patella,or a loose knee-cap.This is when the knee-cap slips out of place and then pops back in again. It's very common, especially in toy breeds, but it's not dangerous.
