It is a matter of focus, experience, and results.
Many people undergo negative experiences in the pursuit of a religion, and identify those negative experiences with that religion, whether that is justified or not (It's called 'association', and it's one of the ways that the human mind works.)
Many people get involved in a religion, try to focus on its parts and fail, get bored, and then focus on whatever consistently brings them the results they want or need.

Then again, some people can retain a childlike sensitivity.....

Try this, be of calm mind and refrain from judging, and on a Saturday evening go to a Synagogue. What especially for the moment when they bring the Torah out - - - if you're sensitive, regardless of your beliefs, you should feel a massively intense threat/protectiveness. That's an angel, charged with protecting the Torah because it contains the Name of God (no, not 'God', that's His title, and YHVH isn't it either, YHVH is just a convenient way of thinking about the nature of the One whose "I Am!" created the Omniverse). This is that thing which the commandment in the Bible is about, remember "Not taking the name of God in vain"?

Once you have sensed a non-physical entity, regardless of what other people believe about it, it all becomes much easier to interact with the non-physical world and find which path thru it best fits, teaches, and empowers you.

Some scientists suspect that there are certain people that are more susceptible to experience religious trance, and most of them find meaning of that feeling through a church. There is also a great number of gullible people out there, and there is also great influence put on people since childhood.

Comfort.

For most, churches offer comfort to their people. I think that's the popular appeal, comfort and a place to belong. It's not really a spiritual motivation, but there are good parts of being human that are brought out (friendliness, etc...).

As to why people are not at all...That has to be a personal reason for each one. I don't think that there's a popular reason.

because everybody is different. Why are some people mean, and some nice? Why do some people have blonde hair, and some brown? Why do some people like carrots, and others don't? Every single person in this world is different in their own way.

Faith is a gift. It is the pearl that is worth any price. I think the people who have great faith are the people who have a good idea of the shape of their soul and so they know how bad they need Jesus. Their initial plea to him has in turn filled them with love for him and anyone who has been given much--loves much.

I think that a better question might be, "what is the difference between a religious person and a spiritual person?"

I don't. I've got enough to think about within the three foot perimeter I occupy without nosing in on someone elses'. See why I'd never make a good communist?

thats a question that can't be answered from one person. It's like asking " why do some people like to watch tv and some don't".
