I've come across it in Scotland (historically, that is) as a female form of Peter. It can be spelt in different ways, such as Peterina or Petrina. In one specific instance it occurred when after having four children, all girls, the father, Peter, seemed to be desperate to call a child after himself and couldn't wait for a son!

Pebble or little rock.

It is from the Greek 'petra' meaning rock. The 'ina' is a diminutive, meaning small or cute.

My best friend in college was named Petrina. She was awesome!
