both. Many times anxiety is a neurological issue and will most likely be heretitary - ADD, depression, OCD, etc. But it can also be picked up as a learned behavior. Children learn right from wrong from their parents and if the parent is afraid of something, the child will feel that it is wrong and be afraid of it, too.

I would say its hereditary. My paternal grandfater has anxiety disorder and so do I. I am terrified that my children will get it and have even considered adopting because this disorder is so handicapping. I mean, if I weren't on anti-anxiety medication, I would not be able to go to work every day because I am so terrified that I will die somehow that I can barely take a step beyond the bed. Yeah. I do NOT want my child to suffer through that.

I'm really sorry to say that there is a chance that it could be passed down like my mum had epilepsy and now i have it ( also my dog strangely) Even if you child did turn out bipolar usually if there is family history of having bipolar the doctor will take note of this and so your baby may be put on medication from an early start in life. But you have to think about whether you would e able to handle a child that is bipolar hope i helped

I believe it is both. My sister-in-law is just like her mother from being around her. My husband also has the same characteristics but he barely lived with her growing up. Some anxiety symptoms have been known to be hereditary while others are just a child basically seeing it first hand. Believe me I've seen it with my own eyes for the past 8 years!!!

If it is associated with a mental illness then yes. However if it is a result of some type of trauma in your life, then no. They may genetically be more prone to developing anxiety though, since you experience that.

Personally I think its more of a learned trait. I suffer from anxiety and so does my sons. (both adults) My parents didn't suffer from this. But then again we know more today about this than we did years ago. So Maybe it is also hereditary. Ask a specialist.

Of course, it can be hereditary or their environment. If both parents suffer anxiety, the percentage increases.
