My cat loves to be outside and will whine all day and night if I don't let her out to play. We adopted her from the shelter and I think she was a stray. I just found out she may be pregnant from the vet. He wants her to stay inside so she won't have her kittens outside. I am worried because she seems so sad. It is heartbreaking. I feel like a warden in prison with her. Any suggestions?

One of male cats walk with me outdoors on a halter and leash. But it took time for him to get used to the feel of the halter around his body. The first time I put it on him, he just laid back down and wouldn't walk. Then I left the halter on him for longer and longer periods (indoors) until he realized he can walk and move about with them on. When he was walking around with the halter on without lyng down every few seconds, I attached the leash and led him out (or rather, he led me out) the back door.
I am now in the process of training my kitten to do the same; but the silly kitty still keeps lying down. So i guess, halter and leash traing depends on the cat!

Another suggestion is for you to either buy or build a cat outdoor enclosure. That way, kitty will still feel like she is really outside while being safe and contained in one escape-proof place.
That's what I'll be doing as soon as we move from here in 3 wees time - build a cat enclosure in the backyard, I mean.

You can put her on a leash on a halter but you have to be with her at all times. Also, since she is now pregnant, she is not going to accept the leash as readily as a kitten would. You needn't feel like a prison warden though either. It shows that you love her and want only what is best for her. Get her a cat tree from Walmart and put it by a window. Also get some boxes for her to play and birth in. It will take some time, but she will eventually get used to it. She was used to the big world freedom and now has to get used to a safety freedom. I know it is hard to hear her whining all the time but its better that than winding up dead.

I have 2 cats and they love their tree and boxes. Good luck to ya

Yes you can put a cat on a leash. I had a male cat that loved to be outside. I lived in a motel and worked there. So one day I put a leash on him that I had made and I tied it to the poll outside my room. It was long enough for him so he could walk around and jump up an my car. He would get inside my car if the windows where down. After a couple of weeks of him being outside like that I desided that I would take him for a walk with me to go and lock up the laundry room. Well he walked on that leash just like a dog would. So every night I would take him for a walk. He loved it and so did I, cause I could take him places with me.

I understand your situation/problem, I sort of had the same. I have been living here for about 1 year now but I used to live in the country where my 2 cats would play outside all day, they would come & go. Shortly after we got here one of them would always sit at the door as if waiting for it to open so she could run out. I felt so bad, sorry for her, I had to do something. So I bought her a leash, I bring her outside for a while everyday (not in winter of course) she seems to enjoy this. She does fuss once in a while because she doesn't like having the leash on, but once we get outside she's ok. Good luck!

The best way to find out is to just do it. The cat won't like the leash at first but if it wants to be outside bad enough it will tolerate the leash. Or just open a window. My cats sit at the window almost all day and they are happy to do it.

i does not do it. With some family individuals cats it extremely works to take them for little walks in the event that they are very calm kitties. they have cat strollers and outdoors pens that artwork ok. while you're taking it to the vet, or around different animals, i could in no way positioned it on a leash. If it by some means gets away, it ought to get snagged on something and choke. it is a danger of your cat dropping its existence in case you positioned it on a leash. I strongly propose a taxi for transportation and vet visits, and an outdoors play pin for exercising. Or, you should bypass the previous school way, interior cat, taxi for different activities.

I am currently trying to leash break my kitten of 6 months old. I saw a family in Yosemite walking a cat on a leash with a harness, so I know its possible. So far I have been moving slowly and have gotten him used to the harness. I have put him on the leash but he will not walk yet. I think my next step will be to let him walk around the house with the leash attached with no one holding it.

I have used a figure 8 leash, you can buy them at a pet store. A cat can slip out of a regular leash. The figure 8 leash goes around their neck then back around their front legs and latches on their back. It is also adjustable.
Walking them is the problem. These are great to use when traveling to the vet also.

Yes, and it works great for some. My cat trained to la leash just fine, but we gave it up because then she would try to slip outside every time we opened the door. Now we just open the window so she can sit at the screen and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine from the inside of her home. We also feed birds at feeders where she can see them from a window. She loves it for different reasons than we do.

There are leashes for cats, but the cat needs to get used to being on one.

You have to be with the cat the whole time she's on a leash, though, because she could hang if she gets tied up in it.

Would it help if you open a window with a screen, so she can sit in it and see what's going on outside. They can keep busy with that for hours.

Try giving her some "people tuna" (the cheapest tuna for people you can find in your grocery store). Very often if they have tuna (which won't harm them and which will gives them some nutrition too) they are so content that they just spend a lot of time cleaning their paws and go off and relax somewhere. I find its like a tranquilizer for them!!
