i read this thing about nail biting on the net.. here's what i saw:

When to worry about nail biting
In rare cases, severe nail biting can signal excessive anxiety. Consult your child's doctor or school nurse if he's biting his nails so intently that his fingertips are sore or bloody, if his nail biting is accompanied by other worrisome behaviors, such as picking at his skin or pulling his eyelashes or hair out, or if he's not sleeping well. Also consult your child's doctor if his nail biting habit surfaced suddenly and escalated quickly. In either case, professional counseling may be in order.

i do all those things. do you think i should tell my mom? she's not the one who's very nice and understands her kids. she doesnt take time to listen for what i have to say. who should i talk to about it?

ps. i dont want to go to the doctor cause they might call her and i dont wanna talk to her about it.

I think I have figured out your problem. It's your mom. You need to talk to an adult that you trust about your problem. That adult needs to help you talk to your mom about what she is doing to stress you out. If you ignore the problem it will only get worse. A doctor may or may not be able to help you. Your mom changing her behavior will.

If you don't find a better way of dealing with your problems it will ruin the way you look, which will create more anxiety. You need to find a hobby that involves your hands to help you. It is difficult to just stop doing what you are doing. You are doing it to relieve stress in a destructive way. You may also be feeling insecurity and loneliness. You probably have a low sense of self worth.

Take it from someone who can't quit, take care of this early before it becomes a lifelong habit.

Hello Jian,

First of all ... please realize that on it's own nail biting can be a harmless habit - that is: when the subject doesn't hurt him or herself (no bloody wounds). Nevertheless, in modern academic psychology nail biting is considered as a form of SELF-MUTULATION.

My suggestion to get rid of this unwanted habit is to become more aware of the psychology behind your unwanted habit. You can read more about the psychology of nail biting at:

Greetings + best wishes from The Netherlands, Martijn.

Tell her, then tell your dad or a grandparent or someone who cares about you. If you feel its as serious and your not just over reacting to something you read, do something about it. If you go tothe doctor and they call her then there really isnt anything she can do about it at that point anyway plus you will have achieved your end result by letting her know and making sure that its treated.

I used to bite my nails a long time ago. My Dad gave me a hard time about it, so I simply grabbed a pair of nail clippers and used them every time I felt the urge to bite them. Case closed.

Your mom is the cause of your anxiety. You have GOT TO be a brave kid and talk to her. Get an aunt, uncle, sibling, grandparent or other authority figure to help you...

answer this question.
do you seem abnormally restless, and unable to relax or concintrate on everyday matters?
if you answered yes, you have anxiety. if you answered no, you just have a bad habbit and/or are under stress, activly stop yourself from doing it, and think, is there anything that's causing stress in my life.
