I must say its really funny especially with all the news recently how Jack straw asked Muslim women not to wear veils, that when you are in a muslim country they expect you to adhere to their cultures and beliefs but yet they are not willing to do so when they are in foreign countries.

I say to you mate, wear your cross proudly around your neck, never hide your religion for anybody. To do so would be like rejecting your God, in this case Christ. He will protect you in any case.

Good Idea, get a great big one, .
Wearing a Cross and chain outside your clothing is like wearing a swastica to say, look Chaps I am a Nazi was it not fun Gassing several million jews (No offence Harry)
It is like someone wearing Muslim Robes, Burkah or veil in the street in America or the UK to indicate approval for the Tube Bombings and 9/11.
If you want to wind up the locals and come home in a coffin yeah go for it.

I would´nt recommend it I worked in the middle east for three years, and have seen crucifixes ripped from peoples necks and stamped into the ground, why do you think there are no churches out there? they can build mosques in europe but christian worship is not tolerated out there, and if your a woman then beware, the arabs are the biggest hypocrites in the world. And there religion is archaic and out dated even though its much younger than christianity, and one more word of advice never look an arab man directly in the eyes he´ll take it as a sign you want to sleep with him, male or female they´re not fussy.

The answer is that a Muslim country cannot force foreign visitors to anything which would seem to pick out them from the rest of the people. For example, in Saudi Arabia, a foreign visitor can still buy alcohol (on production of their passport) in hotels and restaurants.
But your cross may be seen as an affront to Islamic rule, so it is safe to take it with you, but you may want to keep it hidden until you know otherwise.

I'd suggest you wear it inside your clothes unless you're at a Christian site.
When I went there as a tourist they had standardized rules for visiting sites. These are were something like: Ladies mustn't expose the top of there shoulders nor wear short shorts; Men must have a hat to enter Jewish sites, must take it off when going inside Christian buildings, and I can't remember if it mattered for Muslim sites. The tourguide will tell you what the protocol is for each site.
Think of it this way: You're going there to enjoy yourself, not solve all their problems.

It depends on wear you go.. Never be afraid to show your faith, but be causious. Do not witness to anyone about cristianity. And dont listen to Fassa's comment. Some muslim countries are very set in there ways and consider it disrespectful to there muslim belief. So i would say wear it under your cloths. And as for Fassa, muslim countries do take offense to disrespect of there culture, beliefs... They do expect all foreighners to adjust to there style of life and respect there laws, which depending on where you go, if your a woman you must be covered and when it comes to faith, you can beleive what you want as long as you don't disrespect there. There are several forms of disrespect when it comes to there religion... Good luck have a safe trip...

Which Middle East Country are you visiting????
While most Muslim Countries won't kill you for wearing a cross, I won't advise it at the present time. There is too much tension in Islamic countries.
Enjoy your visit.

Yes you can, there are many Christians living in the middle east already.

Number of Christians in these countries are:
Egypt: 4,700,000
Syria: 1,000,000
Lebanon: 950,000
Jordan: 290,000
Israel: 115,000
Iraq: 5,500
Palestine: 100,000

If its a holiday hope you have a nice holiday, if its for business I hope you are successful.

Not a good idea, and if you're female, cover up your hair too.

Apparently it's something to do with respect for the Islamic culture, but I haven't looked too far into it because I'm not likely to visit any Muslim countries.

Try getting in touch with your travel agent for advice if you're really unsure.

As long as you remember your body-armour, Harrier squadron, and hand-held ack-ack gun. Remember it's easier to get hold of a gun than water in many Middle-Eastern countries and killing a Westerner is a sport over there. If you think of yourself as walking amongst Napoleans army with 21st century technology, well you get the picture.
