I drove it for a rental car and put about 300 miles on it. I hate ford, but after I drove the escape, I don't mind spending the money to purchase one! Believe it or not, the gas mileage was the same as my '06 nissan sentra! That's why I sold the damn thing. As for reliability, go to www.carpoint.com and click on used cars or new cars then click on the scroll down option and click on ford escape and look up the consumer reviews. It's the best site really, I buy cars based on that website alone.
Also, I have a friend that drove a bunch of small suv's and ended up with the escape.

Yes. They are very good very reliable vehicles. My great uncle had one and it was perfect. Never had to do anything to it beyond regular maintenance. That is until he had a seizure and accidently wrecked it. When he did wreck, he pulled out in front of an 18 wheeler not knowing it and I saw the car just the other day when we were at his house and it doesn't look like it did much damage at all. Just the side has a dent in it.

Lots have opinions, I have facts.
Wife has 2003 XLT 2wd. It's been a great vehicle. Needed a minor repair under warranty when it would not start and went in for a recall. It's fast, powerful and drives pretty good.

I have a 05 Escape hybrid with about 24,000 miles. I haven't had one problem with it. It's a wonderful vehicle. Plus, I average around 33 MPG city. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned.

I bought my Escape last summer ('05). I have had no problems to speak of. Initially I had rented one and made my decision after driving the rental for a couple of days to purchase one of my own. A friend of mine works for a different auto maker but told me that after test-driving 3 comparable models of small SUV's that it ranked the best for him. It has great visibility (no real blind spots), and it great in the snow with the AWD. I suggest one.

Where I work, my boss and his wife both have the new hybrid model. They are company cars and have been fine so far. We have a third in the fleet that is a base model stick shift non hybrid model which has been ok too. The bosses with the leather seats and satelite radio is nice!

If you really like the Escape, just buy one. You never know what kind of problems You'll get when you buy any vehicle nowadays. Who knows you might not have any.

I CURRENTLY DRIVE A FORD ESCAPE AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. IT HAS 55,000 MILES ON IT AND I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT SINCE I BOUGHT IT IN FEBRUARY OF 2005. I LIVE ON THE NAVAJO RESERVATION AND HAVING THE AWD IS INCREDABLE. PLUS I LOOK GOOD DRIVING IT. HEHE. IT IS JUST A DEPENDABLE VEHICLE AND I RECOMMENED GETTING ONE.
