I have a theory that there is an unconscious doubt in their belief in God.Finding themselves in the presence of an avowed atheist triggers into semi-consciousness, and it is so frightening it is almost impossible to tolerate.
Remember that the belief in God not only serves as an emotional comfort, but it also is central to family and community life. If you stop believing, you're potentially condemning yourself to a life of isolation.

Atheists are viewed as a destructive enemy to the church because they are very hostile towards it. In the 90's, there was a string of church burnings in Europe perpetrated by a "Norwegian Death Metal" satanic group of wonderful humanitarians. After being interviewed they were very proud of what they did after serving a light jail sentence and looked forward to when they could do it again heiling Satan all the way. (literally!)
The peaceful egghead God-haters in America are the ones responsible for turning our public schools into atheistic training camps spreading their anti-religious rhetoric to liberals for the purpose of reinterpreting the 1st amendment. (thereby destroying it) Atheists will not be happy until the secularization of America is complete and the govt is 100% hostile towards religion. Oh do I have them pegged wrong? Read some of the hate-filled distasteful, out-of-context, braindead vomit on this lovely humanitarian site......

It's not wrong. I'm Christian and I'm telling you it's not wrong. Some people simply feel the need to impose their belief on others. I would never want anyone to impose their beliefs on me so I would never critisize someone else's beliefs/choices. I think that you have a valid point that people fear aetheists for a lack of logical reasons. It's simply another take on the world, that's all.

I have nothing against Atheists, and to be honest,i'm wondering what kind of things have you seen,to have this conclusion(no ofense intended).
Where i live,in Europe, people have no problem with Atheists,actually..i've never witness such a problem.
If they belive,fine..if not..again fine, people don't really care about that.

I think Humans are FORCED TO SUBMIT to FAR TOO MUCH AS IT IS - to ADDITIONALLY carry the yoke of some demanding parent-deity.
Atheists throw of this yoke, because it gives humanity a really sore pain in the neck - which in turn makes them grumpy, argumentative and ultimately even violent.
Parent-deities are for malcontent humans who base life on tragedy-

Let's stop labeling ourselves as 'atheists' and let's stop with the christian bashing and, most importantly, the victim/persecution dynamics. All of this reaks as horrible ego identity and the stench is filling up this room.

I don't care who it is. If a person makes themselves out to be a jerk, they are a jerk. There just happens to be a lot of jerks who are atheists just like within every group of people.

I don't find them threatening or offensive. But... it's my duty as a Christian to bring word of salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus to anyone who may not have heard it. So... sorry if I'm repeating something you've heard already!

If they are not hurting anyone nothing is wrong. However I have seen some really hurtful remarks flying on both sides here.

Once you allow yourself to open up and experience the power of God's Love only then will you be able to understand.
