To let someone know you are taken. It's like why a dog has a leash, so somebody will know it has an owner.

One of the most significant symbols coming from the past time to our time is the circle. It was adapted by all cultures from ancient to present. Circle symbolizes perfections, unity, peace, holiness, endlessness because of its no beginning and no end. People in the Ancient Europe used hair knots as circle rings and it was a symbol of love, faith, friendship. Rings made from materials like iron, copper, silver and gold became popular during Medieval period. The reach class usually uses the gold and silver ones. The rings became jewelry in the 14th century.

Christians started to use rings for their wedding ceremonies in 8th century. As a symbol of love, wedding rings were first documented in second century by the Roman poet Plautus. Use of wedding rings, are known from the recorded marriage contracts signed in the presence of the Emperor’s image. Egyptians are known as using wedding ring as a symbol. Wedding rings and bands were mentioned in the hieroglyphics on the walls and tombs. Egyptians used for bands heavy metals encrusted with precious stones.

Until the 15th Century only Kings wore diamonds as a symbol of strength, courage and invincibility. Over the centuries, the faceted diamonds (diamonds that produce sparkles with internally reflected light and shows off the "fire" of the stone) acquired their unique status as the ultimate gift of love. It was said that cupids' arrows were tipped with diamonds that have a magic that nothing else can equal. Since the creation of diamonds they have been associated with romance and legend. The Greeks believed the fire in the diamond reflected the constant flame of love

Wedding bands have a multi-faceted history. Many cultures use the giving of a piece of jewelry from the man to the women as a sign of possession. More recently, in Europe wealthy landowners or merchants would give a family or signet ring to their wife as a symbol of which family she belonged to. As the years have passed, it has become a symbol of eternal fidelity (or mutual possession) and love hence the circular designs.

The wedding bands are circles that are endless, meaning forever. A long time tradition for many centuries. It's a shame how easily that circle of love on my ex'es finger didn't mean anything to him.

A wedding ring is a token of possession, but rather than symbolising a man possessing a woman, it is the woman's possession of something valuable given by the man.

It is to let the world know that you are taken and not available. That being said, I've been married for 25 years and my husband and I both do not wear wedding bands. I don't need a piece of metal to let me know that I'm married.

Unbroken Circle - No beginning No End (as love should be)
and the reason it is supposed to be worn on left ring finger is because there was believed to be a vein there that led directly to the heart. :)
