Before you use any herbal remedies, you should still check with a doctor about side effects, especially if your huby is on other medications. St. John's Wort can have some pretty bad interactions with other medication, which is why it's less popular these days.

I took St John's Wort for two years and obtained relief, unfortunately, over time it becomes less and less effective and another treatment or medication has to be found.

St. John's Wort helped me (not severe depression), but it is not recommended for severe depression.
If your husband doesn't eat fish at all, I would suggest he get fish oil supplements. Omega 3's are vital to brain function and have also done wonders for eliminating my own depression.
It depends on severity.

Some people claim they get relief from it, unfortunately it can have serious side effects if taken with certain medication. Check with Doc before taking on your own.

Studies show that it doesn't work; I tried it and didn't think it worked. A friend recommended SamE and I think it definitley works.
You will also find out if you do some more research that it's also good for the liver and for your joints. (You'll find it at Trader Joe's, Vitamin stores, and drugstores and it's not very expensive).
Please keep in mind that it's not for serious depression.

Do not use over the counter remedies for someone severely depressed. He needs professional help.
