i am making a robot usking pic16f877a microcontroller now i need to transmit signals from my computers` parallel or serial port to the robot for controlling it .which effective way should i adopt to control it like to use ir or rf based tx/rx pair and how the transmitter ckt is to be made ie pins of muc to be connected

Get a remote controlled car. Connect the output from the computer to duplicate the control switches. Pull the circuitry from the car to operate the robot.

RF will tolerate losing line of sight to the receiver
RF can be used outdoors

I think IR is maybe a better option than rf
