American Express has started selling gift cards that work like regular credit cards. I'm sure Visa and MasterCard might have similar options.

I know you can buy 'pre-paid' MasterCard's in predetermined amounts such as $50.00 or $100.00. I'm not sure if you can load any amount you want.
