It's part of a quotation (from Ephesians) ... "One Lord, One Baptism, One Faith."

"The meaning of “one baptism” in Ephesians 4:5 and whether it refers to water or Spirit baptism has been much debated through the years, and although there are exceptions, the scholarly consensus is that this refers to water baptism. It is this author’s contention, however, that this conclusion is based primarily on a misunderstanding of the role of the Spirit in Spirit baptism."

(and it goes on!) ... http://www.bible.org/page.php?page_id=332

My impression is that I was taught that 'one baptism' meant both by water and of the Spirit at one and the same time. It's a long time since I took Catholic instruction and I've walked many roads since then!

Edit: Having read that it is part of the Nicean Creed, it occurred to me that Tolkein's "One Ring to Rule them all ..." might have been an echo of that. He moved in circles in which it was well known and would have been well discussed.

Jesus said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved." (Mark 16:15-16)

The Catholic Church believes that you can only be saved once and therefore should only be baptized once.

The Nicene Creed (from the year 325) states, "We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins."

The Catholic Church recognizes the baptism of anyone who was baptized with water and the words, "[Name], I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

With love in Christ.

Catholic Church recognises ONE Baptism. It is part of the "Niceen Creed" which professes the Catholic Beliefs into one prayer. It also reminds us that all who are Baptised in the name of Christ are our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
