I've heard people order dry martinis and dirty martinis but I don't know what that means?

extra dry martini = dump some vermouth in martini glass, swish it around a bit, pour it down the sink. meanwhile put bombay sapphire in a shaker with some ice, add a scant dash of bitters, shake it, strain into glass flavored with vermouth (add a large cocktail olive). i'll have a double please.

A martini made with just a drop of dry vermouth. A bartender taught me a trick to make the driest of martinis. Just whisper the word vermouth over the glass. Prime Minister Winston Churchill professed that the driest martini made was just having a bottle of dry vermouth in the same room was ample. A dirty martini uses the juice from a bottle of olives.

It has less vermouth, like most of the people said (I think a couple said more vermouth, but that's not correct). I love martinis...usually there is a 5:1 ratio of spirits to vermouth, but someone who likes theirs "dry" will lessen the vermouth.
A dirty martini just has olive juice in it, but it's typically made with gin and not vodka. Martinis, in general, can be made with either.

It's a martini with less vermouth than normal.

Note that vermouth, added to the gin or vodka, is what makes the martini (it comes from a brand name), so a preparation that does not contain any should never be called a "martini".

A dry martini has very little vermouth in it. A dirty martini has olive juice in it.

A cartoon showed a man telling a bartender how to make a dry martini. He told him to just whisper, "Vermouth", in the glass. When the man drank the martini, he said, "Loudmouth!" As you see, this is a subject for many jokes.

There are degrees to "dry" and it depends on the amount of vermouth.
"Regular"
A 1/2 oz of vermouth is used in the martini

"Dry"
The glass (chilled) starts with a splash of vermouth and it is swirled around then descarded

"Very dry"
A drop is used to swirl in the glass and it is dripped almost completely out of the glass.

"Sahara dry"
gin or vodka os served in a glass and the open bottle of vermouth of waved over the martini. The only flavor of vermouth is the smell of it.

"Dirty"
A few drops of the olive juice is in the martini and has a slight tinge of a gree color

"Porn star dirty"
About 3/4 oz of olive juice is used and it is an obvious green color.

"Sweet"
Sweet vermouth is used, about 1/2 oz

"Slightly sweet"
See "dry" but with sweet vermouth

They mean: use only a little vermouth -- not 1/4 vermouth & 3/4 gin, which is the standard martini.
