It's one of the noises they can make. It's their way of communicating. Did you know that some people think that their cats make silent meow's when in fact they are making a sound which is outside of the normal human hearing range? Ultrasonic.

The mi or me part communicates a greeting like I would like to be friendly and meet you. The au or ow part communicates that I am ready to fight if you want trouble. In other words it is a warning to other cats to approach with caution.
