Don't waste your time with COBOL. It's useless now a days.

For a total novice, start with BASIC. Why not? Everyone starts with BASIC because it is really basic and its great for learning. Then move on to Pascal, then C and C++ or Java.

In reality, the best way to learn is to learn the syntax of the language and then get sample code from other programmers and learn off of their technique. Look at www.krugle.com for code samples.

Start with C++; don't bother with C. Dude, it realy depends what you want to do from there, but starting with C++ will give you an opening to computer programing. An awsome book with C++ is Sam's Teach yourself C++ in 24 hours. Then you can move on to other programing like COBL ect. You could probably search the internet for other Programing languages on what you are interested in. I'm in the computer gaming bussiness, it's awsome stuff.
