Have you ever felt that way? John 17:3 This means everlasting life their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God and the one you sent forth, Jesus Christ. So wouldn't reading the bible help us to get closer to God?

Well i thought of Acts 17:26 & 27 - And he made out of one man every nation of men, to dwell upon the entire surface of the earth, and he decreed the appointed times and the set limits of the dwelling of men, for them to seek God, if they might grope for him and really find him, although, in fact, he is not far off from each one of us.

Yes, we can get to know him, otherwise why would he have that written? He is not far off from us it says.

The greek at john 17:3 can also be translated “their knowing you.” and conveys the idea of getting to know a person, not just knowing 'of' them.

It is also important to know god's name and use it, could you have a close relationship with anybody without using their name? God's name is Jehovah, it appears nearly 7000 times in the 'old testament' but it has been removed by most bible translators. Do you think god approves of that? seeing as he inspired the bible and saw fit to tell us his name and have it written in there so many times?

Reading the bible could help you get closer to god IF:
-- your assumption that god is in heaven is correct (and there's no proof there is a god or heaven)
-- your assumption that the bible is the word of god is correct (and there's no proof that it is, and considerable proof that it was written by a bunch of men -- with no proof of any kind that they were inspired or influenced by a god for whose existence there is no proof)

:)

hey hey!!! did you forget the Holy Spirit that lives inside you??? and the angels God sent to protect you?? and reading the bible does make you closer to him, as you are reading his words and truth!! Don't forget that the bible is a very interesting book. you should realise that reading the same verse at different parts of your life gives you different insights.. that's one of God's method of communicating with you.he's a living God.. he's all around you!! how can it be impossible to know him??? but we must continue to read and learn though...

God will meet us and love us right where we are, because in order to get to know God you must pray and read his holy word, from the bible, because every time we fellowship and worship God,he is getting to know us,because the bible tells us who God is and how we must live,to get to know him better.

reading the text won't inherently do anything.

its the meaning that the text carries along with it thats meaningful.

the God that I belive in, is everywhere, not only in heaven. theres nowhere he is not.

and my personal experiences prove to me that its not impossible.

the only issue is that the nature of God is way too big to wrap one's head around fully while here.

Being Christlike to others and obeying the commandments is one sure way of knowing God better. He works through us.
