depends what your using it for and how experienced you are at shooting, i use both and it makes no difference to my shooting. The side by side was the most common about 10 year ago, since then more and more people have come tto use the over and under which were ounce fround apon on the big estates, not any more. when it comes to which one is better there is no comparisment

Bound's hubby here:

Presuming quality made guns, either is a good choice.

Side by sides are typically less expensive than over-unders. I find that to break open a side by side is much easier than breaking open many over-unders. I think this is due to the geometry of the locking mechanism and the extractors/ejectors. For me, I find I shoot a side by side better than an over-under, because the barrels are on the same plane, one barrel does not shoot higher than the other, as would be the case for an over-under.

My recommendation would be a quality side by side ... it is generally more fun and less work for me to shoot well in the field.

Good luck!

For precise shooting, over and under is the way.

Side by side is slightly more convenient to use and reload.

Depends. O/U for sporting clays, side-by-side for scaring the holy crap out of some turd that's broken into your house, unaware that he's soon gonna meet his maker.
