My mom breastfed me until I started weaning myself (I was totally weaned by 1 yr).
My mom breastfed my younger brother till he was 2 1/2 yrs.
Breastfeeding is really healthy for your child... 18 months is not "too old". Try weaning again in a few more months.
As for his allgergies, my brother had allergies to milk too. (Soy and Dairy.) We were really happy to find "rice milk" as a healthy alternative to both.

Well, since he can't have milk or soy, I would suggest that time will wean him. Keep breastfeeding until he no longer needs the milk of another species to nourish him. Don't worry about the fact that he shows no interest in weaning. He is well into the process now. He'll gradually start eating other foods and will nurse less. You can't see it day to day, but over time, it's there.
If you doubt that he's weaning, keep a journal. Even making a note about how often he's nursing once a month will probably show you that there are signs - just not obvious signs.
You could also pump milk into a cup during the day - that might break the association between drinking milk and nursing, and still give him the best milk source for him, especially with his allergies.

My son didn't want to be weened either at 18 months. I gave him goat's milk (tastes more like mother's milk, and has all the nutrition he needs from milk), and he liked it! I didn't use a bottle either. I told him he was getting to big for it, and needed to have a sippy cup. He got the idea when I stopped wearing button down shirts! LOL! Your son shouldn't have any allergies to goat's milk either. My son was also allergic to all other milks. Between goat's milk and rice milk, he was totally fine! Good luck!

He'll stop soon. Once he starts daycare and sees that none of the other kids are doing it he won't want to either.
As for milk try Goat milk or ask your pediatrician to recommend something else.
Right now he's still young. Enjoy the bonding. Soon he'll be an obnoxious teen hitting you up for money. LOL!

Has he been on the bottle or sippy at all? Try pediasure (or the generic is fine too) since he can't have milk. If your ready for him to be weened and he isn't it won't be fun, but A firm "No more" might be your final solution.... :)

You could try and feed him solids before he nurses, that way he'll have a full tummy and will eventually nurse less and less. Also if you do it this way your breasts won't hurt so bad, if you just straight cut him off you'll become engorged and sore. Don't worry about weaning him right away though, mommy's milk is still great nutrition for him!

how about you try him on cereal or use other toddlers treats to make him attracted so that he switches from baby treats to your milk. you can also try to cut down the breastfeeding sessions you have with him gradually say from 3 to 2 then maybe to 1 per day. this takes time so you willl need lots of patient =)

i have a 20 month old son also breastfeeding.. i just read recently that 18 months old is about the worst time to try and wean, probably because of the seperation anxiety issues they have aruond this time.. you might want to wait a few months?
