Labrador's are great with kids as well as golden retrievers. As with anything get a puppy so it can grow up with the kids, it will bond with them, protect them and be less likely to turn on them.

Puggle- Its a crossbreed between a Pug and a Beagle. They are very loving dogs that do great with kids. I have a two year old and she is constantly lying on the dog, hugging, and grabbing the dog and she doesn't mind. There a great breed because you get a lot of the good characteristics from the Pug and The beagle breed. They are a medium to small sized dog and are very loving and aim to please there owners at all times. I have never owned a more loving, loyal, and obedient dog.

In my honest opinion German Shepards and Retrievers are loving dogs and do have good track records when it comes to kids but, I think you should match your dog according to your kids age and size. A dog is an animal and you can never properly gauge how it will act or behave. In short a large dog could do a lot of damage to a small kid. Just use your best judgment.

Good Luck hope this helped.

I grew up with beagles and they are great kid dogs. They love attention and to play, they can either live inside or out. They have short hair so they are easy to take care of. Be careful while shopping for a dog though, do some checking on the breed before you pick. Some dogs are really hyper and not good for kids. Jack Russel Terriers and Dalmations are 2 that come to mind.

If you are looking to get a new pet, take your children with you and go to a local shelter. They can show you a variety of potential new pets. Let your children interact with them to be sure they are good with kids. A mixed breed dog is generally a better choice as they have less health issues than a purebred. The right pet will pick you and your children for its new owner.

Although most dogs can do well with small children, the best dog that I have found that are gentle with children, a good companion, and faithful, is the Golden Retriever

Personally I would not have a small dog around children; my reasoning is they can get nippy because they are small and kids can scare them. I have had all kinds of dogs from heelers to Bostons. I love BOXERS! I curentlly own a 5 month old Boxer. This is my 3rd one. They are loyal, great babysitters, protective of their family, and not to mention a true joker! I would also reccomend a lab. I would stay clear of Rotts, Pits, Shepards. As far as a beagle....no Thanks! Bark to much for me....

i think that the best dog would be either a toy Pomeranian or a miniature schnauzer because they are each a very small type of dog and have a very gentle nature. they are also very smart and would know how to act around young children.

Any small animal make sure you are possitive that you like the dog, make sure it has a well built body stucter,it must be a puppy or else it might be used to children. The best way to start with is a puppy that way it will grow fond to the kids and will not die from old age!

I agree with the German Shepherd answer, they are very loyal and protective. I advise against dachsunds, they are cute and seem like a great little family dog, but they tend to be aggressive toward children. FYI

labs are very patient and understanding and great with children. I had one when i was a kid. also certain terrier breeds are good and very protective of children, however stay away from the hyper breeds.
