This is his first move since becoming part of our family. He has always been an outdoor cat but I have been advised to keep him indoors for a while after we move. Is it possible to train an older cat to use litter also does the butter on the paws thing really work. Anyone with personal experience would be much appreciated.

Cats generally get how to use a litter box with no training. I don't think you need to try any tricks with butter on his paws.

You might be prepared for cleaning up some messes, but I would suspect that these would not be accidents, but him marking his new territory.

I have been told that the best way to ensure that your cat knows he's home, is to make sure all of your furniture is moved into the new place before you bring him there. The smells that come along with the furniture will give him the right message.

From personal experience, I have found that keeping them locked in one room (the back bedroom, for example), on the first day or two, works well...It allows them some time to adjust to the smells and sounds of the new location without the added stress of trying to learn the new layout at the same time. It also allows you a bit more freedom in moving things about in the rest of the house, as you don't have to worry that he's under foot, or about to escape thru the door you inadvertently left open.

Good luck!

To move a cat (Ive done in at least once a year) is to wait to you have move everything in. Move the cat in last because they don't like being locked in a room until your done. Then just comfort him tell him everything is OK as weird as it sounds it works. Then let him wander in his new place. Don't bug him but keep an eye on him. This might take a few days and then hell be fine. Also as long as your ready to take your time you can train the cat to go in the litter box. Although i wouldn't do the butter thing hell most likely lick it off or not be amused that you did that to him. Good Luck!

Yes the butter thing works, also don't let the cat see where you are going, sit him on the floor of the car or he will try to find his way back to the first home. He will instinctively know how the litter tray works.

Even with an older cat, you hardly even have to train them to use the litter box. They just sort of know. Show the litter box to your cat a couple times and he should get the idea.

I've never actually tried the butter thing but it sounds kind of messy.

When I was a kid we had an outside kitty that lived to be 17 years old. We moved alot and he just got used to it. He used the litter box but preferred to do his thing outside.
