III. History
Tail docking and ear cropping date to the early Romans, who believed that the practices prevented rabies.11 During the European Middle Ages, through the end of the 18th century, Lamarck's theory of acquired characteristics12 was widely accepted. As such, people believed that by docking the tails of the parents, "the new born puppies would look like their parents" and also exhibit short tails.13 In addition, long-tailed or floppy-eared dogs used for hunting, fighting, or watching flocks were at a greater risk of injury associated with those activities. As such, tails were docked and ears cropped to reduce the number of places another dog or other animal could grab. The owners of working dogs often believed that tail docking reduced a dog's maneuverability, thereby discouraging the dog from chasing game,14 while the other dog owners often believed that tail docking resulted in a stronger back and increased speed.15

Finally, various tax schemes may have accounted for the proliferation of tail docking. In some areas, dogs used for work were not taxed, so the owners of such dogs would dock the tails to indicate that the dog was used for work and not subject to tax.16 In other areas, farmers were taxed according to the length of their dogs' tails, so docking was used to reduce the tax liability.17 Moreover, sport hunting was considered to be reserved for the wealthy nobility, and it was believed that only long-tailed dogs were suitable for hunting. As such, the owners of long-tailed dogs were required to pay a high tax and tail docking became a practice of the commoners.18

Because it used to be meant for show dogs and then it kind of became the norm. My best friend has a boxer whose ears are born flappy. People cut boxers' ears too so they are pointy and stand straight up. My friend's family decided not to do it because they thought it was cruel. When my mom was growing up, they used to mate boxers and sell the puppies. They used to cut the puppies ears when they were young so they wouldn't have to go through it when they were older. My mom told me that when the puppies came back from the doctor, they would cry and cry for like three or four days straight from the pain. I think it is cruel. Animals are beautiful the way they are. Unless people are combining them with wire brushes to get knots out or something like that, the animals should be left alone in terms of "cosmetics."

Mostly on pit bulls is when they fight so the other dog wont tear the ear off and look ugly and for doberman it is just for looks and sometimes they do it for looks on pit bulls too.It should only be done if the dog is show quality i have a pit bull and he dont look mean like other pit bulls i've seen with clipped ears, he looks sweet and his looks say it all.and about their tails i've never seen a pit bulls tail cut off ,i've seen a rottweiler, a doberman, and a boxer but it is mostly just for looks

I think it has to do with the fact that alot of these dogs were used to fighting. The long ears and tails would get in the way, so cutting them off a young age would mean less tearing and ripping during a fight or something like that... I think people who still do that kind of thing should have their own ears cut off!!!

Mostly is it a cosmetic thing...but sometimes the people place the dogs into the fighting scene so they cut off the ears and tails to make it less attractive to other dogs in the fight. They are less likley to lose their ears and tails if they don't have them.

In both breeds it's a cosmetic look. For Dobies it's AKC standard , and for Pitties I think personally it's a macho thing.Guys who want to walk around with a tough looking scary dog. Leaving the ears natural the dog looks to friendly. The show Am Staffs and Pitties it's acceptable by the judges to have the ears done.

To give them the ideal look. There is nothing wrong with leaving the ears and tails the way they are, but some poeple prefer there dog to have that aggresive look.

Working dog breeds, such as the doberman, are traditionally cropped and docked to prevent their ears and tails from being caught and snagged on things. Dobermans were bred as guard dogs, so they are cropped to prevent attackers from grabbing their sensitive ears and injuring them. It has nothing to do with 'image' or fighting the dogs, it is done for practical reasons.

So they don't get bitten off or chewed off in pit fights. Doesn't give the oppossing dog something to hold onto or hurt and creates an advantage.
