He should begin looking at scholarship books. Some scholarships have requirements like community service. He should choose the scholarships he qualifies for and the ones he might be able to meet the requirments for in the next year. Look carefully at the deadlines and set up a schedule for applying. Your younger children should do the same now so they will qualify for more scholarships when they get older.

He should also be looking at colleges to apply for. He should apply for these as early as possible in order to be eligible for the most scholarships from the school. He should talk to the financial aid department at each school and ask about school level scholarships that he can apply for.

Most of his college applications and scholarship applications should be completed over the summer even if they are not going to be mailed in until later.

He should not limit his choice of colleges based on price. He should apply to at least one community college and one state university because they are cheaper. Ultimately the cost of the college will depend on how much financial aid he gets. He will recieve an award letter that will give him that information before he has to make a decision about which school to go to.

Well first and foremost I would say make sure he doesnt start to get "senioristis" too early! He's very lucky...I'm 24 and never got the chance to graduate from college because I didnt have parents who could help me. One just didnt have the finances and the other did but didnt want to help. Check out all financial aid options...theres a student plus loan you can get that can be refinanced into his name after a few years so you arent stuck with it. There are also a TON of grants out there that people just don't know about. Your best bet is to go to the coucnler cuz they can give you better information

First off you son should concentrate on getting a decient GPA, this helps a lot with getting scholarships. He should be able to meet with his school guidance counselor for an application for scholarships. There should be a list available for him of the scholarships available for your age group and the requirements. In college he will fill out one scholarship application and he will be placed in brackets for scholarships he is eligible for, this takes a lot of the work off the students shoulders. After that he is placed in these brackets the donors review the application and then he will interview with them.
A scholarship is free money. MOST financial aid and scholarships are on a NEED basis. So he will get help. Having a good GPA helps. So he should study hard and good luck!

He should aim for good grades in high school, and then he should do the first couple of years at a community college (way cheaper than a four-year institution, and he can transfer all of his credits to a state school, should he decide to go further later). Lots of high school kids seem to think that a community college education is somehow less than a 4-year college. NOT TRUE. I am a college professor, and I have taught in both kinds of schools.

have him get a job, even if its part time, if he puts his money in the bank he will get some intrest on it, which will help a little...

he can also apply for scholarships at school... every bit helps

my sister just started college she had to go to the bank and get a loan, it is frustrating but sometimes thats all you can do...

if you want him to save money while he is in college, he should stay home (free rent) and go to a nearby college...
