A friend of mine recently visited there and said that most of the milk there was "sweetened" and that if you want to buy "unsweetened" or "natural" milk that you have to go to an organic food store.
Was she exagerating, or is this true?
I'm from South Africa and live in the UK, and apart from my mom putting honey in my hot milk at night as a child, never had milk with sugar in it.

No, it's not true. However, as a prior Answerer states the USA does permit cows to be injected with a hormone to increase production. However, there is a growing consumer backlash, and many brands
have recently declared they will no longer buy milk from farmers that use it (because competitors which have for some time rejected such milk and promoted that policy have dramatically increased their market share).

Our northern neighbor, Canada, has never permitted use of the hormone.

No.They can only put in what it says on the ingredient label. Since milk is a commodity with a registered set of ingredients they don't need a label unless it has something unique like sugar in it.

Other than as part of sweetened condensed milk (for Dulce de Leche) I would bet that no one in US has ever seen a milk jug that says "MILK WITH ADDED SUGAR"

If that friend offers to sell you a bridge in the US that she purchased while visiting don't give her the money for it - she has a nasty sense of humor and is making a fool of you.

There is naturally-occurring sugar in milk... see under "lactose"... but the content may vary from place to place, due to the way the cows are fed, and the the milk is processed.

False.

The organic milk they sell here just comes from cows that haven't had the bovine growth hormone added to it.

The only real difference I notice is that org milk tastes creamier than regular. I get my milk from a regular grocery store.

The thing is, the organic milk's experation date that I just bought yesterday is Nov 14th. Regular will last only a week. I buy it because I will definately drink all of it long before the x-date. I get leery about milk then it's x-date comes up.

It's not sold with sugar in it, but adding a bit of sugar to your milk sure does taste good.

Not true. No sugar is added. However, the differences in what the cows eat makes a difference. All cows may eat grasses but the types of grasses can make it taste different.

She wasn't exaggerating, she was lying.

The only sweetened milk you can buy here is sweetened condensed milk, which is pretty much used only for baking.

There is otherwise no such thing as sweetened milk.

If "they" are making sweetened milk (ie: chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, etc.) then yes. Regular milk is not sweetened.
