It depends on what you are wanting to perform on the saxophone and your playing level.
I use my Yamaha 52 alto for both jazz and classical music because of the sound projection and clear tone. For jazz ballads I switch to my old Conn alto, made in 1926 area.
For tenor, I just bought a Cannonball Big Bell Global Series.
I play college/professional level music.

I would recommend going to yours and many other music stores and try as many of the saxophones as possible. See which gives you the best tone, projection, feedback (feeling on fingers and mouthpiece that you like), and feel for you.

If you're looking for a beginner/intermediate horn, the Yamaha YAS-52 is a pretty good deal for a very quality horn. If you're going to get a Selmer, make sure it's made by Selmer Paris, NOT Selmer USA. I'm not sure whether they are the same company or not but the quality on the USA ones is pretty low.

Especially avoid Winston and Jupiter, because their horns are extremely low quality (as in, take it to the repairman as soon as you get it home from the store!).

In general, Yamaha and Selmer Paris are going to be your best options for any level of saxophone.

As a professional musician for many years, and a music teacher now, I can tell you that Jediman has it exactly right!

Yamaha is the all-around best, but Selmer Paris horns are very nice for all-around use as well.
