said that we do taekwondo as a way of life and study more of the art than the competiton side, should all martial arts be like that

It's supposed to be that way. In any other case, it would just be considered a sport, all done for physical and competitive purposes. When you take a true martial arts class, it goes beyond that. It covers mental as well as physical. A true martial art is a balance between the two.

Yes, all Martial Arts should be trained as a way of life, they were all created for one purpose, preserving life, first of the the individual that studies the Martial Art no matter what discipline it is, then the preservation of the opponent with as little violence or malice as necessary.

Martial Arts are a way of life, it teaches confidence in the Martial Artist, and respect for both other individuals and life itself.

those who train in Martial Arts just to fight haven't truly learned what Martial Arts is truly about; and have therefore wasted their time training if they have such insecurities.

And although many Martial Artists do train to become competitors or instructors to make a living for themselves but that's not what Martial Arts was intended for, but that's how our world has evolved since the times when Martial Arts were first created.

So yes Martial Arts IS a way of life, and it helps in all aspects of any individuals life, IF they're receptive enough to learn it in the proper manner and proper frame of mind.

the Comepetition side is the least important aspect of Martial Arts, simply because as in any competitive sport (and in this day and age Martial Arts is no exception) there are gifted participants, and in Martial Arts everyone that participates is given the chance to participate and not just "left on the sidelines" to watch.

This is true for any true martial art (as oposed to just a fighting system). It sounds like you have found a good instructor. Good luck.
