I live in Raleigh and in the 3 years I have been here it has only snowed once. I have heard that is about right for frequency. The snow is beautiful though and they do get ice but it is both ice and snow. And because they dont get it very often they are not prepared for it either so when it snows even an inch, schools, shops, towns shutdown until it melts. It will get cold though so be wary. It does hang around the 40's quite a bit juct never geting to freezing.

It snows all over the state but more often in some places than others. In the mountains it snows regularly. Especially in the more northern mountains and higher elevations. I believe it was May of 1992 it snowed 60 inches over a 5 day span in the Pisgah national Forest near Asheville. There are 5 ski resorts in North Carolina mountains. The further east of the mountains usually the less often it snows. I lived in Winston-Salem and some years it might snow 3 or 4 times in a year, some years none. Down near the coast, every once in while it snows and sometimes big snows over a foot. The biggest snow I remember in Winston-Salem was around 15 inches. Most snows outside the mountains are from little to no accumulation to about 4 to 6 inches. Most of the responses I read to this question are not accurate. Some I think were inaccurate on purpose. I have lived there all my life and this is what I have observed.

RE:
Does it snow in NC?
I'm moving to NC (20 miles north of Charlotte) from Florida (Tampa Bay) in a couple days for an indefinite amount of time and I'm wondering what type of climate changes I should expect? Does it snow in the winter? I've never seen snow and that's something I'm really excited...

It does but not every winter and when it does it's usually no more than an inch or two. But if you've never seen it before, a couple of inches will be amazing. I'll keep good thoughts for snow in NC this winter! Enjoy! Good luck with the relocation.

Weather in NC is God-awful year-round. Summer you have tornadoes and hurricanes (or the constant threat of them), it s hotter than Hades, and it rains 5 out of 7 days per week - just really nasty. Fall after the lovely leaves turn color you are buried in leaves and tree gunk - for homeowners this is a PITA esp if they have an even remotely wooded lot and gutter cleaning is a constant chore (do you LIKE cleaning gutters 16 times in 2 months?). You can t keep a car clean there either without a garage. Winters are dreary, rainy, very icy and yep - snowy - almost every year - they refuse to be prepared for these events because the gov t there doesn t believe in climate change, so everything just closes down and you can t drive anywhere. Due to climate change, Winters in NC are WORSE than they are in Michigan. Spring, they have lots of yellow pollen, seed pods and canker worms ( a LOT of worms ) which dump all over your house, yard, car, and the worms eat the newly budding foliage off of all the trees. The worms are really gross - they cover everything. The worms are new pestilence in certain areas the state - Charlotte for instance and other areas of the "Piedmont". People say they love having "4 seasons" - but in NC is essentially a swamp weather wise year-round. Each season sucks badly for a different reason. The weather in NC is just terrible year-round - worse than anywhere else in the country. It s the worst place to live for bad weather. Only place worse might be Boston or MA where they have bigger snowstorms.

I live in Shelby, NC which is an hour drive from Charlotte, and I think we've had snow every year. We do have ice storms often, but we get really nice snow too! It is definitely really cold here and the wind is so terrible it tore the door off my greenhouse.

I wish the dates were posted for the original question. I used to live in Charlotte and in 2007 moved to Tampa Bay. As to the snow, yes, it does sometimes but it usually only stays for like a day, maybe 2 in shady areas. As previous replies listed, Charlotte does get more ice. Don t drive in it if you can help it since the equipment (snow plows) isn t there but it is nice as an adult to have snow days :-) The one good thing that Charlotte has now is the light rail on the south end of Charlotte. If you need to go uptown (or as they now call it, Center City). The last thing I can say is I hope you enjoy it but as I ve lived in Tampa now for almost 8 years, I despise going back in the winter (I seem to always pick the time when it is going to snow). Good Luck!!

prepare to freeze your butt off. it snows in NC and there are also ice storms where it rains and freezes instantly glazing everything with a thick layer of ice. I live in AZ and there is no snow here in Phoenix you will hate the cold trust me.
